JMortensen
Found out about some asphalt modified tires on miata.net. They have close to the same sizes as Formula Atlantics, so you have 10" for the fronts and 13" for the rears. The rears come in several different diameters so you can adjust gearing a little bit. The prices are pretty incredibly low, $115 for the fronts, looked on ebay and saw new rears going for $100 each. Apparently they're turning times about the same as would be expected from a Hoosier R6 with the medium compound, there is a softer compound as well. Here is the Miata.net thread: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=462522 Here is the manufacturer's webpage: http://www.americanraceronline.com/Asphalt-Track/modified.html
h4nsm0l3m4n
Very cool. Curious to see how these tires in their softest compound compare to A6s, or even the bias-ply compounds. My tire budget would benefit greatly if they are comparable. Edited May 29, 2012 by h4nsm0l3m4n
h4nsm0l3m4n
I talked to Roger Kraus Racing this morning about potentially buying a set of tires and using them for an autocross car. Their response was that the sidewall on these tires is not stiff at all so they wouldnt really work well, especially in a (relatively) heavy car like mine (2500 lb). They recommended going to A6s or sticking with the Goodyear R250s slicks I currently run. That being said, they're cheap enough that it wouldn't be a huge loss to try nonetheless. It looks like the thread you linked made it to several other forums. I'm hoping someone out there will give them a try and find out how to make them work. That would cut my tire budget in half! SleeperZ
I'm using the Hankook RS-3 tires in a Miata size (225/45/15); the tire store had me sign a release for them to mount the tires because I said they were for a car with a higher GVWR than the Miata (my 280Z). They seem to work just fine.

I had to dig a bit to find some rules, but it looks like the class min is 2625 lbs. http://www.raceofchampions.net/rules.htm
