ryan95i4
81 or 82/83 setup? 81, you adjust the CAS which is down by the crank pulley. 82/83, the CAS is in the Dizzy, and you adjust it by turning the dizzy. Check the FSM for procedure and factory settings: http://www.xenons130.com/reference.html
rickyellow zee
Its an 83. I checked the FSM and theres no info. I need to know whats stock timing. I was told its 6-8 degrees and Ive also heard its 20-22 deg BTDC. I need to know which timing is correct, where the timing mark is. Thanks for the reply. Its definitely in the FSM, because i just did this myself , check page MA-46 (MA Maintenance). FSM for '83 calls for 24* +/- 3 for the L28ET (the non-turbo setting is 8*, perhaps thats the confusion). The timing mark is on the pulley, but often its very faint due to age. Some suggest finding it with the car off and putting either chaulk or white-out on the mark to make it easier.

What NewZed said, re-read my post Turbo, w/ turbo dizzy and turbo ecu, stock base timing should be at 24*
rickyellow zee
My bad. I meant 24 deg.
rickyellow zee
When setting ther timing do I need to disconnect the TPS? I read that on one of the threads here. Thanks
HowlerMonkey
FSM for L28et states 20 degrees + or - 3 degrees at 650rpm in drive. This is shown on page EF-28 in the factory service manual "turbo supplement". Since most L28et came with automatics, you will arrive at your best timing by starting there and experimenting for what works better with your manual transmission. rickyellow zee
Thanks. Gonna take the car back to the local Datsun shop and have them alter timing.
rejracer
The timing on the L28ET has different values based on the year. 1981 turbo supplement has the following on page MA-20: 20* +-3* @650 rpm +-50 in drive for automatic transmission. 1981 did not have MT as an option. The 1982 service manual has the following for ignition timing on page MA-40 20* +-3* @700 rpm +-50 in neutral for manual transmission. 20* +-3* @650 rpm +-50 in drive for automatic transmission. The 1983 service manual has the following for ignition timingon page MA-46: 24* +-3* @700 rpm +-50 in neutral for manual transmission. 24* +-3* @650 rpm +-50 in drive for automatic transmission. Timing is checked on the 83 with TPS plugged in. Procedure is in EF&EC-47. "Adjust ignition timing by turning distributor after loosening bolt which secures distributor". That's all the FSM states on the matter. 82-83 L28ET is possibly the easiest engine **In the world** to set the timing on. rickyellow zee
THanks. My motor/distributor is an 83 but the coumputer and AFM are from an 81. Does that confuse things? Ok so I set the timing gun to zero and checked the timing at the crank its at the 20 on the timing guide. So thats 20deg BTDC correct? No. Set the timing to match the ECU unless there have been significant changes to the engine over stock. The marks are BTDC. I suggest this thread get moved to the shed.
