Need help selecting NEW CLUTCH

Recommended Posts

My stock clutch releases great at normal city driving speeds. But, at the track, shifting at high power/rpm, the darn thing won't disengage to allow shifts fo 3rd or 4th gear. I've been thru the hydrualic system and it is working fine. I am, however, tired of how fast the clutch hydraulic fluid gets filled with clutch dust. My first two drag nights the car shifted great, except that the last run of the second night I was trying to slip clutch at the line to keep my axles from breaking. A guy from the stands came over to praise my car's performance and to tell me that my clutch was really smelly, even up in the stands...must have cooked it.

So, I want to replace my entire clutch/pressure plate system (and flywheel if needed). Key Point: I want to use a system that includes a non-GM throw out bearing. From my research that leaves me McLeod and Quartermaster.

Please give me your recommendations/experiences with these two clutch systems. I want to get something in expedited shipping tomorrow. Got a big drag weekend planned in 8 days.

1. Have you tried a new slave cylinder?

2. Monster clutches, hands down, unless you want a twin... which at your power level is not necessary.

The problem is not the design, its obviously one of your components. Love it or hate it, its the truth! No sense in blindly throwing money at a problem.

Finding another down side to the GTO system, all these clutch systems are designed for f-body flywheels. So add the cost of a fly wheel to it. Have thought about trying to tear down and just replace clutch disc and slave, but I can't find a source for the disc only.

Monster stage 2, unless you like to break drivetrain parts then go with the 3  . What master cylinder are you using? I would go ahead and replace everything and get it done, new slave/TOB, clutch/flywheel, pilot bearing. People are big fan of the LS6 clutch as well for better stock replacement. But I love my monster clutch aside from the fact that it eats everything behind it. If I could do it again I would go with the Stage 2 Monster and never look back. On the stage 3, when the clutch starts to squeak cause it gets glazed over, Monster literally tells you to stop driving like a girl and go beat on it. Any company that tells you to beat on their clutch, thats good enough for me. Dunno how different the F-body stuff is from the LS2 stuff though.

Sunny, don't worry, I'm still looking at small approaches to the problem. I've ordered a speed bleeder for the remote bleeder line (I want to keep bleeding even though the pedal feels good), and I'm looking at different transmission oil (maybe synchros aren't working well with the cheap Advance Auto Dextron III I put in it. Anybody heard of a Mantic clutch?

Dropped tranny last night: warped flywheel. Mantic ER2 ordered today from East Coast Performance.

Not too bad. As sunny told me, you need about 3feet of extension with a u-joint on it. Remove cross member and let tranny sag away from floor pan to expose bolts. Remember to disconnect wiring first (ask me how I know that tidbit?). Put a ziplock bag or something over tail housing to catch oil. Separate tranny from bell then bell from motor.

Clutch arrived today. Too pooped to even open the boxes. Had a friend in town for the weekend. He's been having trouble connecting with his son so we were to have a "mans weekend." his son hardly spoke all day. I took them to the local drag strip. We watched for a while and said, "let's race your truck.". He said no way. I said hell yeah. I put his 14year old son at the wheel and talked him thu a 10-sec 1/8-mile run in the 4-door hemi truck. We did it all: water box, burn out, staging, pro-tree, foot-braking, floor it thu the traps. Kid did great. Finally he spoke the first words of the weekend: "That was awesome!". Canoeing the next day didn't go as smoothly but it was still fun. I've got to start working out!

Found the energy to open the little crate that the clutch kit came in. Disc, pressure plate, flywheel, ARP bolts (gotta go buy a torx socket), new throw-out bearing and slave, 4' insulated remote bleeder line with speed bleeder. I'm really suprised by how thin and light these flywheels are. I didn't weigh it, but no wonder I warped the last one - I always thought a flywheel was heavy and thick.

Keith,

How much torque or HP is that set up good for? Austrailian clutches are normally pretty good. Very streetable and tons of holding without a bunch of chatter a slow speeds. I was going to go with a Textralia myself. I know everyone likes monster but they chatter like crazy. All is it is a clutch form a HD truck, great holding force but sucks on the street unless having your teeth chatter as you reslease the clutch is good....LOL

Supposedly 800hp, but I think those claims are totally made up to sell clutches. The stock clutch was fine for my motor - I just slipped it too much and overheated it - it was totally my own fault. I toyed with returning to another stock clutch, but the money was about the same. GM is really not trying to keep much of a replacement part business for the GTO; I guess it was too limited a production.

Thanks,

Let me know what you think about it, I will be ordeing my motor, trans and clutch in Feb. Maybe I go the same route you have. My main goal is street use that's why I'm leaning towards the Textralia since I have used it before and it holds well but behaves like a stock clutch.

Maybe if you don't know how to drive it....

To each his own, but I LOVE my puck monster. No chatter, no noise, breaks S HIT on the reg type holding power.
