The NewKid's 280z

Well I installed a new bulb in place of the old one. After 2-3 hours of work the headlight lamp still wouldn't turn on! I checked the fuse box to see if it was a burnt out fuse and there wasn't even one in place?!? Well I went to the hardware store and purchased a new fuse and now it works great! Ahh so much work for nothing :icon55:! Well at least I know how to change a new headlight now! And also today I yanked the hubcaps off and painted them all satin black. It looks great but still needs some sanding which I will do tomorrow.

Supposedly the macco in plano has good reviews... I've read on forums that if you do all the prep work and get the 2 stage job it wont come out half bad! It has 23 reviews on google that say its great and two that say they got the 129$ special and weren't happy with it!

Hey guys did some work on the 280z this weekend. When I was driving down the road last-night the lights kept flickering and my cop radar was going bananas?!? I pulled to the side of the road to realize my battery's negative cable was disconnected. When I got home I tried tightening it and the old battery connector snapped into 3 pieces! Well I got 2 new ones and installed them and am very happy that I did the work myself. My dash cap is still in the process of being finished. It needs some more glue on a few of the edges/ glue removed on the edges in certain spots.

Here are a few pics:

Hey guys, I've done alot since the last time I updated so here we go. Last weekend I completed my job on the dash by using a 2 screws to hold the sides down because the glue didnt adhere very well at all. I then removed the old cold air intake and installed a new 3" cold air intake with a large cone filter from chromeintakes on ebay. I can feel the difference from 3000-5000 rpms, it seems to rev quicker too. After that I took the valve cover off and painted it with gloss black rustoleum engine paint, it turned out very nice. This weekend I purchased a fule filter after seeing that the old one was manufactured in 1991 and had black sluge around the fule line connections :icon10:  Anyways could someone please answer my question above (2 posts up). :icon47: Now pics....

2. Replace passenger side headlight

3. Polish and Install 280zx 6 spoke aluminum rims ( I am thinking 195 in the front 225 in the rear :icon54:)

4. Paint and repair rear tailight assembly

5. Plan and begin to prepair undercarige rust repair/reinforcement.

In the past few days I've been making some progress on the 280z. The first goal of mine that I met was installing the passenger side headlight and cleaning up the chrome headlight ring. On Christmas Eve I replaced most of the vaccume tubes with red silicone tubing. I also did a oil change on the car after realizing the previous owner had pensoil in the engine (eek :icon56: ), replacing it with royal purple and a k&n oil filter. These modifications really woke up the engine! I even beat a foxbody mustang yesterday (4 cly probably lol)! Tomorrow I am going to polish and install some zx 6 spokes I got for 100$. Supposidly these aluminum rims weigh in at 13lb and my stock steelies are around 20lb. So 24lb of rotating mass removed should enhance the performance of the car right? Correct me if I'm wrong...

Hey I have lots of updates on the z, but first I need to know, How do you remove the tailight assembly? Im Painting the plastic and cant find any how-to's :icon51: . PLEASE HELP!!!

Hey NewKid,

I copied the relevant sections from the service manual...

Sorry if the quality isn't that great.

You'll note in figure BF-36 there are 7 screws that hold the assembly in place (for some reason I think I only had six). The screws in the bottom corners of the trunk compartment may be difficult to reach; I think I ended up temporarily removing the plastic panelling on the sides to gain better access.

As a side note, be sure to reference the proper way to remove the rivets for the rear panel (figure BF-38) -- makes removal super easy!
