Z Exhaust pics!!

Recommended Posts

Here's my first ever exhaust build. It's a 3" manifold back exhaust for my stock engined 280z. I was prepping it for stock class at autocross where exhaust is open, and I have an L28ET await install one of these days, so i figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone and build an overkill exhaust. Of course the flow is way overkill for the time being, but I figured the big pipes should contribute to the deep sound I was after. I settled on a 3" center in, offset out Magnaflow Superturbo muffler (I might ommit it come turbo time and it's cheap and seems to sound good on everything). I also have cheap 22" long, glasspack just after the downpipe. It's from summit and is actually 3" all the way through unlike some others. The rest of the system is 3" aluminium mandrel bent tubing and a Vibrant stainless flex pipe.

The muffler is the same configuration as stock and fits nicely:

Quick and dirty 3" downpipe until the turbo swap:

I'll try and get a video clip uploaded. The sound and volume turned out as good as I could have asked for. It's got the nice smooth deep sound I was hoping for, but still screams up top. It's quiet enough not to piss off the neighbors, but comes alive when you get on it.  It's a bit droney around 1800RPM, but with 3.90 gears it's not a concern on the highway so it's perfectly liveable.

Your exhaust is almost identical to the one I had. Flex pipe, resonator, and muffler. My Summit resonator was not straight-through like the Summit description said, however.

I'm guessing you meant aluminized steel. I'm tempted to replace the rear section of my exhaust with aluminum pipe. I'd need to measure temps after the turbo to be sure.

I had to find a new exhaust guy so it's taking a while. Dropping it off on the 22. Here's what I got so far. ^ I will end up just cutting a small slant on the end of for a tip. I have V bands for the whole thing. Everything is T304, well that's what all the companies listed them as so we will see in time.

The results. It's just a loud as the old one at idle but very quiet under cruising conditions. No more freeway drone. City drivability has increased dramatically. I might ceramic coat the down pipe but it doesn't get that hot really. Maybe because its t304. Still have a wastegate problem ^.

didnt do it myself (came with the car)

Do you have any pictures from the side of the car. I'm considering a similar idea for mine in the future.

I've attached some older pictures of my exhaust. 3" made from mandrel bent candy canes. It fits very tight to the car.

Here is an cold day idle video:

Yes, I meant aluminized, though I just finished my first attempted at aluminum pipe fabrication on a new 2.5" intercooler pipe setup, and the it has given me the desire to one day perhaps make catback or axle back out of aluminum. It's so incredibly easy to work with, minus the welding. The ability to cut it cleanly with a wood chopsaw makes things sooo much quicker and easier, and angles can be tweaked very quickly with a belt sander. Combine that with its lack of corrosion properties, price and weight savings compared to stainless and seems rather attractive, as long as it can put up with the heat and punishment.
