Late model Supra TT swap?

Has anyone looked into this? Is it feasible? The motor is a 3.0 liter inline six, and is just about as close as bullet proof as you can get from a 6, imho.

I plan on buying one of these Supras once I get my bachelor's in CIS done in like 16 months, but for now, I think this drivetrain would be killer in a z! How does 296 rwhp stock sound?!

Any feedback on this is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben France

it all boils down to cost IMO

how much can you get the setup for? are you doing it all yourself? you can get 296rwhp

from the 280zxt motor with the right setup, and probably a lot cheaper than swaping a late model tt supra motor. but you can upgrade the crap out of that motor, looked into putting an 80's turbo supra motor in a z once, cost per hp was out the frame......

if your going for 296 to the wheels, a stock v8 will do that asleep for way way less...

SORRY ABOUT THE BAD POST--I have a 91 Supra Turbo engine (7m-gte) in my 510 wagon. I bought it from K. Watanabe, a used engine wherehouse in CA. for 450.00 + 150 shipped to my door. Pulled the head off and installed an HKS metal headgasket and have had no problems running up to 16psi (at least for now). The headgasket is around 140.00 + new headbolts for 35 or so. The weak link for this engine is the headgasket but if everything is in order it is a very robust engine. Check out the Sonic website or put supra in your web browser and you'll find much info on this engine. With the right turbo and efi 340+ rwhp withn reason on stock internals. Used engine comes with turbo and manifolds though I did not use the stock turbo and modified the manifolds. Basically I have an engine for under $800 (longblock)that is pretty stout. I could blow up 5 of these and still pay less than I did for a built 280zxt engine which no matter the $ will never have 24valves, oil sqirters for cooling the pistons and 15+ yrs newer technology.

btw, 2jzs don't have 296rwhp stock... sorry icon_smile.gif

more like 250rwhp or so...

but still an awsome swap idea... i wish their were engine mounts and tranny mounts for it... i wonder if the 6-speed would fit in the tranny tunnel icon_confused.gif

Ben,

sounds like a good idea. i wonder why more of us have'nt expanded on this one. your figure of 296 rwhp is absolutely ideal. i've seen some supra's pulling 800 or so rwhp with stock internals! the guy's running the big single turbo and NOS spool up kit are the guy's to get specs from. thre's a guy in Dallas by the name of Clint that swapped a tt setup into a lexus GS300. all i have to say is wow. anywhoo.. totaly dooable, its just the matter of finding that engine for cheap. happy hunting! icon_biggrin.gif

That is the swap I fantasize about. The 2JZGTE motor is one of the most amazing turbo engines ever. With tweaking and a single turbo conversion, a (relatively) lightweight first generation Z would be mind-blowingly fast - it would certainly be the equal of a GN conversion (probably a bit more money, but a 6 speed icon_biggrin.gif )

well i mean; seeing as how a bolton-only 2jz can make about 400-430rwhp at 19-21psi... that in a 2700lb car would be ridiculously fast...

and thats just the beginning; there's a lot of room to expand...

i'd like to do the swap... hell i just got assigned a new project at work and i'm working major overtime which means major $$$

enough to pick up a 280z without a motor and get everything done in it except the driveline...

then if i can get one; get a 2jz-gte with its 6-speed and find a way to put it in icon_smile.gif

if ANYONE ever does this... please make blueprints of the mounts... i'll do the same if i ever do it...

I'm pretty sure the 6 speed would clear the tunnel, it doesn't look that much different size wise from a T56 at least from the pictures I've seen of the Supra 6 sp, it roughly looks about the same size. Maybe some light pounding at the bellhousing and maybe further down the tunnel although the Supra motor mount for a Z would probably put it more in the middle of the tunnel and not offset towards the passenger side as much as a JTR Chev/T56 conversion. I hope someone pulls that swap off, at first glance it would seem fairly straightforward like an L motor that just needs different mounts, usually though theres enough surprises (Turbo plumbing, wiring etc..) to make it oh so interesting... icon_biggrin.gif

Heck, I just want to OWN a darned Supra let alone one of those drivetrains in a Z! I don't think the motors are likely to be very common though I'm afraid. Heck, even the Supras themselves are tough to find at decent prices. I think one of the Lexus may have th esame block etc. but has a higher compression and different ECU etc. - that's why the swap into a Lexus was as "easy" as it was. Look over on ThePartsTrader.COM and perhaps you'll find one...

The J motor can be had for $3-5K. About equal to the Chevy V8 in price according to my research (the T56 bumps the cost way up on the Chevy).

There's incredible aftermarket support for both Mk3 and Mk4 Supra engines - expensive stuff though. There are well documented BPUs that don't cost very much, especially considering the resulting power increase.

The Mk3 is definately the superior choice if you have a limited budget. The tough part is finding one without a blown HG, or even a loose head that has allowed corrosive coolant to get at the bearings, etc. The factory recommended torque on the head bolts was much too low. Very easy to fix if caught in time. The HK$ gasket is mostly just used as a "while you're at it" thing and to pave the way for increased boost.

Mk4 seems to be overbuilt (perhaps as a reaction to the 7MGTE fiasco).

Either way, if Supra510 can squeeze one of these into a 510, it's gotta be a snap to stick one in a Z.

Hey y'all,

This is my first post, and it is finally on a topic I'm really interested about icon_smile.gif ,

I was actually considering a Supra swap as well into my 82 280zx, currently it screams along...I have no idea of wot past mods have been made by the previous owners, it has no turbos but it flies, I have scared the crap outta tonnes of other drivers when I change into 2nd or 3rd and get major wheel spin action icon_razz.gif .

I was actually considering droping in a 1GTE twin turbo, (small budget reasons icon_sad.gif ) and I'm wondering if anyone would have any idea of wot hp could be obtained from this early supra engine (when stock or with bigger turbos or any other mods) cuz I can't find jack on it anywhere....or if a vg30 twin turbo would kick more arse, and wot costs would be associated with the transplant other than the purchase of the engines?

Sorry for the big and convoluted post icon_smile.gif

Cheeeers! icon_biggrin.gif

The Australian magazine Zoom has featured a 240z with a Supra engine - it covers the whole build up process.....I am waiting for the next mag which details the final tuning...

It looks very nice as well with metallic brick red paint and chrome wheels.

Cheers

hey nustad

do you have any scanned pictures of the z with supra motor? id like to see the setup.

my brother has a 97 supra and is part of the supra club and one of the members is pushing 1000hp...on the dyno he ran 690hp at 8lbs...its a pretty crazy setup..he had it for a few months then he got rid of it, i think he gave the motor to his little bother...he wants more than 1000hp now so hes going for the tundra V8 motor with twin turbos..

Wow, it's been months since I've been on here, and I come back to find my topic blown-up!!!!

As far as the swap goes, still just an idea. I did see my first smallblock z last weekend at an auto-cross. Scary fast looking...

As for the lexus w/the similiar motor, that is the sc/gs300. A couple of my friends have them w/turbo kits. One is a bolt-on making low 400's to the wheels, the other is a fully-built monster w/speed pro, sp-63 single turbo, built tranny, etc, making 663 at the rear-wheels w/a locking torque convertor that wouldn't lock up due to the torque. That car is a monster. running low boost (22 psi,) w/the 150 shot, it ran a 11.00 at 126 mph. Now that it's tuned, it'll make 33-34 psi on the street. The tranny blew, so he hasn't got a clean pass yet on it, but we're expecting really low 10s, and possibly high 9's on et streets. Look for this car in Sport compact and Turbo in the not-too-distant future.

Back to the topic at hand, I could access a full 2jz swap for 4-5k, so 10k would be reasonable for the project to be complete.

still an interesting idea.

ps: I've never seen a 2jz powered supra dyno as low as 250, so that is kinda underestimating the car...
