Ozzie831
Hey how's it going? Ive been trying to turbo my 77 280z for a while now and Im getting close to finishing. I put in a MS, MSD 6al and a blaster 2 coil. Im kind of a noob when it comes to wiring so Im not surprised if I screwed up somewhere. It tries to turn over but sadly nothing so I checked the spark. There is spark to the coil (I did the screw driver in the coil plug test by touching the white wire on the MSD 6al to a ground) but not to the plugs (I held a spark plug wire to a ground and no spark). I dont own a volt meter but I can get one from a buddy, I was just seeing if there may be some quick advice or some small thing that I could have jacked up. I know this is a pretty vague post but Im not sure what else Im supposed to put in. I will answer any questions to the best of my ability but again Im kinda noob when it comes to wiring. Thanks for any help or advice
Chris Duncan
When you say "spark TO the coil" do you mean on the primary side (small wires), or do you mean spark OUT of the coil on the secondary (large wire)? If you mean spark out of the coil on the secondary wire going to the distributor then you probably have a bad distributor rotor. It's cracked inside and the spark is going to ground on the distributor shaft. Cheap aftermarket rotors are famous for this. Factory rotors do this very seldom. Ozzie831
Yeah I did the test on the big wire that runs from the coil to the distributor. I bought a new cap so I should have gone and looked for a rotor,
Ozzie831
Im not sure if it makes that big difference but i swapped in a turbo dizzy. idk if it changes anything but I was tired when I wrote the original post and forgot to mention it
skirkland1980
Is the rotor turning while cranking?
skirkland1980
There is a screw on the Turbo rotor buttons. Or maybe a problem with the shaft.
NewZed
There is spark to the coil (I did the screw driver in the coil plug test by touching the white wire on the MSD 6al to a ground) but not to the plugs (I held a spark plug wire to a ground and no spark). I dont own a volt meter You might mean spark from the coil. If so, follow the path. Through the wire from the coil to the distributor cap, down across the contact to the rotor, through the rotor and across the gap to the spark plug wire electrode, etc. There's no screwdriver mentioned here, but it looks like the test you're talking about. Might help - http://www.msdignition.com/page.aspx?id=3206 Buy a multimeter. Edit - Just watched the MSD video. I guess there is a screwdriver. Still, follow the electrons. Edit 2 - I'm not sure that MSD's test for magnetic pickup is right. The reluctor generates the voltage so that test shouldn't work unless the MSD is so sensitive that it triggers from ground loops or static. It might be the test for an optical trigger. Good luck. skirkland1980
The white wire from the MSD is for triggering from points or another square wave ground signal. so momentarily touching the white to ground should generate a spark from a coil wired to the MSD box. Ozzie831
Skirkland: From your first comment. yes it is turning haha I wondered the same thing. newzed: I just did what the video suggested and that's how I came to the conclusion that there was spark from the coil. But when i checked checked farther down the line (at the spark plugs themselves) There was 0 noticeable spark. I havn't gotten a new rotor yet due to being broke. Just starting a new job and havnt recieved my first paycheck yet, but it will be one of the first things on the checklist
skirkland1980
Good luck finding the rotor. Mine has been on order for a few weeks now. Unless Autozone has one that's been on the shelf a few years.
Ozzie831
Im just getting one from summit racing for 4.99 (it's the only one they have for an 83zx dizzy). I live about 10 min from the store so its not a bigy, even if its a cheap one i can still check to see it is the rotors fault.
skirkland1980
Is it in stock? They told me direct ship from the manufacturer.
Ozzie831
They said they had some up in seattle and they are shipping it to my house.
mattb3562
Advance had a rotor in stock for my turbo dizzy. A cap took a couple days
skirkland1980
Well, I now have a brand new cap and rotor for my distributor that doesn't work. Anyone running an MSD box with their turbo dizzy? Mine went bad right after I put the MSD box on.
Ozzie831
Yea i just put on the new rotor and im still not not getting any spark. any other suggestions? maybe i didnt put the duzzy on correctly or something? any advice is appreciated
skirkland1980
Ok. Correct me if I'm wrong. You're converting your NA to turbo? You're using the turbo dizzy? What is the white wire on the MSD connected to? What type of MS are you using? MS1, 2, or 3? What board, 3.0 or 3.57?
Ozzie831
Yes Im attempting to trubo my na. I bought a 83 zx turbo dizzy. In using MS1 V2.2. I was told by a guy at DIYautotune "connect the MSD white wire to MS pin 30." So that's what I did.
