260DET
Best bang for buckest smallest capacity NA engine available. Preferably on stock internals so the engine does not have to be opened. Exhaust manifolds may be a bit cramped in a 280ZX and the exhaust will have to exit at the rear and use a modest muffler but otherwise no external restrictions. Will be using a TR6060 gearbox if that is relevant. Links to reliable sites would be good too, I know nothing about these engines so edumacate me Edited April 6, 2014 by 260DET
socorob
I think LS2 is 400 hp stock but 6 liter? Check out LS1tech.com
RebekahsZ
My stock 6.0 liter LS2 provides 400hp to rear wheels, chassis dyno proven. It is out of a 2006 Pontiac GTO, a.k.a. Holden. No mods other than shortie headers to fit in car and minimal computer tuning. I plan to add an Accusump.
roger280zx
Well the exhaust can be quite different in the s130, but it has been done by a few guys here. As for which is best for your needs... ls1tech is about the best source available. Best of luck!
260DET
That 2006 Pontiac engine would also be known as a L98? If so it's the locally available one I've been advised to get. Thanks for the LS1tech.com tip guys. Edited April 7, 2014 by 260DET
Zfan1
That 2006 Pontiac engine would also be known as a L98? If so it's the locally available one I've been advised to get. Thanks for the LS1tech.com tip guys. Nope, the 2006 Pontiac engine is a LS2, 364 cubib inches. Pontiac made the G8 in 2008 with a L76 364 cubic inch motor. That may be the motor that is in the newer Camaro's with an auto tranny.
260DET
The advice I've received is that the LS1,2 and 6 use 243 cathedral port heads which give the best results when ported. The L98 which is readily available here as a crate engine has square port heads which flow well stock but don't port that well. There is not much choice here with LS's unless I go with much more expensive 'racing' crate engines of various types.
heavy85
LS1 use 241 heads - they say the difference is about 15 hp to the 243. I've been very happy with LS1. Stock except very mild cam and shorty headers and its 365 whp. They suck a lot of oil through the PCV so need catch cans if you keep the PCV system and need to keep an eye on oil level throughout the day. Also need some means to keep oil pressure, especially in long left sweepers. I've found 2 qt accusump and ~1 qt overfill keeps the oil pressure happy. The stock belt tensioner also doesnt like the rev limiter so either stay off it or upgrade to Katech or similar tensioner. Otherwise leave it stock and its just add gas and go. Very reliable. Do it, you wont regret it.
260DET
Thanks heavy, will keep your advice in mind. LS3's are available so will go with one of those, trying to nail down a good price at the moment. Am going to run a wet sump with Accusump, never had oil pressure problems with the VG30DET (Z32 sump) so can't see why an appropriate wet setup should not be OK on the LS. Big slicks may be different.
Zfan1
An LS3 with milld cam thru a 6 speed should net you around 430-450 rwhp, they are a great motor! Good luck with the build.
Domzs
Any block hugger header should work on the pass. side , that's what I have . Driver side , you might be able to use the late model Camaro shorty with slight mod . I used Fbody shorty on the driver side with modified steering shaft . Good luck . 260DET
Going to try using the stock GM manifolds as supplied with the engine, this project is going to be as stock as possible. Thing is with these engines 'stock' covers a lot of possibilities
Domzs
The later Camaro is the only one that I can think of that might work . The steering shaft is at a bad location .
