RebekahsZ
You won't kill it. Great find! I paid an average price of $600 for each of mine. Stock car-don't worry about it till your car is running-you've got time to find one.
Stock Car Mafia
Damn, that is a good price! It's the input shaft of the half axles that give. No worrying on my part! I'll run the open until I find one, I just figure if I start my search now, I will have a greater time period, and hopefully better odds of finding one! trackzpeed
Well bad news.... Reinstalled the differential and it continues to howl and clunk around. I'm a little bummed, however I pulled the unit again and I'm taking it down to a local differential/gearing shop to have the unit rebuilt so it will be bulletproof from this point forward. If it's not salvageable, I do have an extra open R200 differential that I will consider welding and running for the time being...... any thoughts on running a welded differential from the LS crowd would be welcome. Thanks, Jim
RebekahsZ
Solid mounted R200 CLSDs howl and clunk around. If it checks out as ok, Stock Car Mafia wants it.
trackzpeed
Therse are not normal noises ... a rebuild is in order.
heavy85
When mine started howling, it progressively got worse over the year (several years ago). Got so bad had to wear earplugs on long distant drives to the track. Ended up being input pinion bearings. Easy enough to change those bearings. Stock Car Mafia
Good point heavy. You should be able to get a race and bearing rebuild kit for the diff. Get a new pinion nut as well since those are generally one time use.
RebekahsZ
Wonder if that's why the pinion flange came loose. Mine have never done THAT! But my rearrend is awfully noisy and has been for years. I put several different diffs in = same thing. Really howls when I get off of it at the strip. I have no carpets and no resonator on my exhaust-I hear everything. Have you ever been in a Huey with the tail rotor coasting down after engine shutdown? That's what all my diffs sound like. trackzpeed
Ring and pinon are shot..... When the nut backed off it created havoc and trashed them both, kinda finicky... Having it rebuilt, updates to follow.
trackzpeed
Getting a rebuild with my spare 3:90 ring and piñon with new bearing kit...... Should be bullet proof now. Hope to have her back on the road next weekend. My gauges arrived.... Biggest PIA is getting the old ones out.
CableSrv
Sweet! I'm currently planning to do the Q45 upgrade so I'll have a strong rear end for future upgrades to the engine. End goal is around 550 or so HP.
Stock Car Mafia
Did you take your dash out to get at the gauges? Edited December 8, 2015 by Stock Car Mafia
CableSrv
The speedo and tach slide in from the front, the stock 3 in the center can be reached at by removing the front panel. So it is possible to get to the gauges without taking the dash out... however it can be a slight be annoying.
jayem_bo
Any idea what kind of power the car makes with the cxracing headers compared to the shorts?
trackzpeed
That has been up for debate in the LS circles for quite some time..... in genreral, LT's breath better and perform better but it's not the simple. length, flow design, diameter all make a difference. I went with CXR since the package was pretty complete, however I did my own Y-back for better routing and muffler choice. I'm happy with my choice all in all. jayem_bo
Good to know. Cxracing makes driveshafts for other cars but not these, did you just modify the stock one? Does it have to be longer or shorter?
trackzpeed
I had the camaro shaft cut down at a local drivline shop.
Stock Car Mafia
Driveshaft Shop will make a steel one for around $380 if you don't have one to shorten.
RebekahsZ
Spend extra money for good slip yokes. I've twisted off two. Go billet, heat treated, or chrome moly. If not, that's where you will break it.
