kevinz
true. that's why I was hoping that there was a number or something on it I could see
NewZed
I spent the time to remove a diff with a finned cover from a 240SX. Took the cover off and found a bunch of ugly welds. No telling what the people before you did to it.
johnc
You must remove the cover to check. There is nothing external that is proof. You have to eyeball the LSD or you can very easily get ripped off.
dexter72
You can try to do a search for pics of the inside of the clsd, there used to be pics on the net showing the difference between the clsd and non-clsd. with the rear cover removed... kevinz
Will an lsd and a welded diff act the same. Both spin the same direction. If it's an lsd can you hold on to one wheel and spin the other to make sure it's not welded. Don't know if it would work with and lsd or not
NewZed
If you talk gibberish to the guy selling it for long enough he'll probably give it to you.

RebekahsZ
I have 5 actual CLSDs and one open diff that was sold to me as an LSD. Guess which one was my first purchase? Guess which one didn't get the cover removed prior to purchase, cause it had a finned cover and I trusted the seller? It's not a big deal to remove the cover and take a damn picture. kevinz
I thought this site was for people to help each other. I know that the only way to tell 100% is to remove cover and look at it. I was checking to see if anyone might have come up with a new way to tell. If you can't try to help without smart remarks then don't post an answer. Pretty simple. Thanks for the help. I picked up an lsd and cv's for 600 bucks.
NewZed
That last post was well-written, unlike the others. Good luck with the new parts. Read the threads about CV axle length, it can be a problem. Edited January 24, 2016 by NewZed
johnc
Even though you didn't like the answer, you did get help. Life is like that.
NewZed
I picked up an lsd and cv's for 600 bucks. Forgot to ask, just for fun - take off the cover and post some pictures. It could be a VLSD. Not the same as a CLSD.
kevinz
It's a clutch. I was looking for differences without opening up the cover. I noticed that when you take out the shafts that there is nothing obstructing the view on an lsd and there is on an open diff. I don't know if it's that way on all of them or not. Also noticed on the top of lsd that there is a small raised area about 1"X1" that is not on my open diff. Has anyone noticed this before. I can't figure out how the heck to post a pic or I would.
