Xnke
About 32* for most welded-chamber N42's. Some really nicely done heads will go 30* total advance. But, they'll cost your average builder 2000$ or more, too.
josh817
If I may interject, and I haven't found the quenched head thread yet but I think we had one, I have always wondered why you can't have pistons made to fill in the recess...? If you're already going to get shaped pistons why not shape them to for the quench pad and squish area you want in accordance with an open head? I have a situation similar to OP's. Tony D
It goes to the same reason they don't have the head welded. Forged slugs are now $600+, and with a matched top....

I do suppose $600-$900 will get you a welded head, milled, seats machined. If it means being able to use standard flat tops.
Tony D
I wouldn't think a race engine would use flat tops. Ours weren't by a long shot! Welded N42, and a dome. 13.75:1 CR. There's 'racing' and there's 'Racing'...
