RebekahsZ
My diff has been whining for 25 years.
chiefmd
Well got it disassembled today and guess what I found. Inner pinion bearing was "trashed". Outer ball bearing also needs replacing as it does have some rough spots when rotated. Will keep you posted.

chiefmd
Got the diff all back together today. Tightened down the pinion nut per Jon's instructions. My question is how much force should it take to rotate the pinion. I put a electronic torque wrench on it and it takes about 35 lbs to rotate the pinion shaft. The FSM state about 20 lbs. Should I back off the pinion nut a little?
JMortensen
Pinion nut torque shouldn't change the torque to spin the pinion. The resistance comes from the distance between the two tapered roller bearings. If you have significantly more resistance than that, the most likely cause is the pinion seal dragging on the pinion flange. Did you grease it? Did you seat the ball bearing and the seal all the way? chiefmd
Jon - Thanks for the input. I pulled the pinion flange a greased the seal. All is good. Thanks again.
