R34 is more or less the year of production I think (correct me if I'm wrong) around 1994 - now ish, what engine are you thinking about RB20, RB25, RB26 or RB30 and turbo or N/A

not a good choice even though biggest out of the RB seires it came out of a VL commodore not very hot..weak internals from what i've seen...you'd better off with a RB25DET or a RB20DET if you only want 375 hp RB20 is lighter... RB25DET responds better to mods etc.,

if you just want a skyline motor to have a skyline motor it'd be cheaper to put a L28ET in it or a FJ20ET

The R34 Skyline GTR's used the RB26DETT I believe. I think the R33 Skyline GTR also used that engine. You might want to do a search on the internet for "Skyline" and "GTR" though to make sure my facts are right.

do a search in this forum you will get lots of hits. R34 is a body designation and it is the latest version of the GTR which i believe hit the market in 99 or 2000. the rb26 has been around since 1989 and has been relatively unchanged

Stony,

what size of intercooler piping are you using? It looks like 3"+, is it 3.5"?

The turbo y-collector on the RB26 dumps out at 3.5" and the in take is also 3.5"

Just got my Apexi GTR core, Wow  is it nice just hope it works as good as it looks. I got it for 588$ from XS eng.

P.S how is the CV swap going? I will have your sump ready soon, if you still want it?

dero,

I can help you out with some of your questions.

#1 unless you have an unlimited budget you should not be thinking of R34 parts, just an example a R34 motor will cost around 5000$ more than a R33 and they are almost the same thing.

#2 I dont think there is a six speed RWD Skyline just the AWD. you can only get five speeed RWD transmissions.

#3 I am making some custom parts for this swap motor mounts, trany mounts, oil pans ,oil pickups, intakes, fuel sumps. So far i just have jigs for the motor mounts. And some parts for the oil pan and intake and exhaust are ready as well, most of the laser cut flanges that is. So i can also help with some of the parts. but i hope to have a line of RB swap parts to help people out.

#4 keep in mind that this project could cost you as much as 10000 just to get it running.

#5 you should do a search on RB in this forum

RB does not stand for racing built. I can't remember exactly what it was, but don't worry, that is a common misconception. Really only the RB26 was race engineered. It is just another line like the L series.

And as stated, they are all inline 6's vice V-6's. think of them all in a line like our datsun motors vice a chevy engine,(a vee shape).

Last, the RB20 is a 6 cylinder motor.

R-34 Skyline has either a RB25DE (2.5 NA) RB25DET, add one turbo or the GTR engine already mentioned.

The biggest change over a R32 is the addition of variable valve timing and 500cc.

Best ie value for money engine for a Z is a R32 RB20DET - 2l turbo that can be made to put out 200kw at the wheels with a few decent mods. If you have the bucks then go for RB25DET or GTR engine.

Have fun

Cheers

Zline,

Ill be using custom length CVs made by driveshaftshop.com, Im going to have some adapters made to extend the tierods out hope this works. as for brakes im taking the rear struts out of the car again and getting the guy who did the original mod to fab up some brackets to mount the z31 rear calipers. if all goes well should be up and running again in a month or so.

Rb30et isn't a weak engine, we (AUS) have plenty of those engines running 10s, consistantly, trying to break into the 8s.

RB20det are the weaker engine for High HP, as the head is **** for High HP engine.. but is great for 240RWKW or so.... but not sure how long the motor will last...

RB25det is the best option for a good budget build, great for high horsepower, mate of mine has got bigger injectors, t03/t04 hybrid turbo, bit front mount cooler, engine management, nismo clutch etc etc... and no internal mods, has run a low 11, and he drives it everyday and get pretty good milage, think he has done 14000 on this setup with no problems, only needing new tyres alot.. haha

Rb26dett, can't say more, the ultimate

The GTR Skylines ever since the R32's have all used the RB26DETT in some form. Regular non-GTR skylines have used the RB20DET, and the RB25DET. The RB20 is bulletproof when compared to the RB25 and is muh cheaper to build and upgrade. If you can settle for less than 400hp, go with the RB20 and you can boost it while still being streetable on stock internals. Check out the 240sx/Silvia forums to find sources for all three of these engines. If you are going to go for the RB25, you may want to consider the Rb26dett because;

- You get to say you have a Skyline GTR TT motor baby

-It is stronger, more reliable, and more upgradable than the RB25

-Jonah Lomu has a 1200hp RB26DETT in his skyline, and hell who wants to mess with him

-What's 5 grand more eh?

there are two main R34 skylines (there are also 4 door models, etc)

but either way.. the GTSTT R34 and the GTR R34

he GTSTT R34 comes equiped with an rb25det neo.. which actually makes almost as much power as an rb26dett thanks to some lovely technology being put in to the equation

the GTR R34 comes with an rb26dett.. no introduction required!

and like Zpeed said, down here in australia the RB30et (which is found in a domestic car here) is built to insanely powerful levels.. pity the car they come in is dog ugly! (imho)

you cant really go too far wrong with ANY of the rb engines in a zed..
