Guest Tom Scala
At 41 Viagra is not needed yet but I'm having problems raising the boost on my car. At the track Friday I had my Dawes Devices MBC cranked all the way in and the boost would spike to 17 then settle to 14-15. I have the wastegate rod shortened to give around 13 without any MBC. My vacuum lines to the MBC are short but the turbo to MBC hose is slightly larger dia. so I can loosen the clamp & rotate the Dawes Device without having to disconnect the hose. I've heard the stock wastegate can doesn't do well at higher boost levels,is this true? It was really frustrating since I added a couple of gallons of 110 octane and was ready to run around 20psi. The car ran well though posting a best of 13.62 @ 102.9 with a 2.19 60'. I had to shift out of first early since I was getting wheel hop on every run when the turbo kicked in. I could get off the line ok by slipping the clutch but just past the tree she'd start shakeing and I had to get out of it & shift. In a perfect world with 20 or so psi & drag radials 13.0's or maybe high 12's are possible. It's nice to dream.
Lockjaw
The stock wastegate actuator sucks IMO. I had spiking problems with mine and the stock turbo, although I did not have any problems holding boost above 13 psi. I had one made by Topend for my hybrid, and it is much stouter. I like it, and since it is a dual port unit, I use a manual boost controller to introduce boost to the bottom port to raise the boost beyond the rate set by the adjustable wastegate arm. SleeperZ
The stock wastegate may suck, but you should be able to get more than 14 psi out of it. Some people run the stock turbine and wastegate to 20+ psi. What happens if you restore the wastegate actuator rod to original length and up the boost with your controller? Can you get more boost that way? The obvious question about making sure you have no leaks in your manifold (or BOV) has come to mind? Guest Tom Scala
I took the boost conroller off and found it had 3 more turns left in it. I went 2 tighter and got a 20psi spike for a split second then it settled at 19. Where it's installed (down by the turbo under the IC pipe) you have to be a contortionist to get to it. In between rounds at the track with a hot engine burning my hands I guess I didn't a good grip on it. Thats my excuse anyway. Now that I have the boost what is a good safe total timing number to run that will make decent power? With a 50/50 mix of 94 octane pump gas and 110 race fuel I was planning on going to 22total @ 20 psi. On this MBC test I just ran on the freeway I retarded to 17 total with a tank full of Sunoco 94 and it didn't protest at the higher boost. I normally run 22 total @ 15psi on pump gas and it's worked well for me.
jeffp
I dont seem to have to much problems with my stock waste gate actuator. I did put a threaded end on it, but other then that it is a stock unit.
Lockjaw
I run 22 psi at the track with 20 to 22 degree's of advance using 110 leaded and 93 octane, but unfortunately, i don't have a stock ecu so I am not sure this helps much. I am glad you guys like the stock WGA, I hated mine. I much prefer the one I had made, and it looks nice too. Nice and shiny.
