Guest Anonymous
Actually they DID make three different housings. 489, 742, and 741. The 489 is the strongest, with a tapered 1 7/8 pinion, the 742 is a 1 3/4 pinion. The 741 is the weakest, however it is, comparitively speaking, just as strong as most other rears of same size! The 741 is the most easily found, and has all the same ratios as the others, but only 3.55:1 and 3.73:1 are available in the aftermarket at this time. The suregrip unit is interchangeable between the three, as long as the correct carrier bearings are utilized. The 489 and 742 housings have gears available from 2.32:1 all the way up to 6.88:1. They stopped production of the 8¾ rear in 1974, but they can be found in just about ANY body.
