I'm thinking of going aftermarket EFI and I found a great deal on a Haltech E6K system. The guy wants like $500 for a complete system with 3 bar MAP sensor. Is anyone out there using this? Any ideas on what would be best EFI/Ignition setup for an 82 turbo, T3/T4, Skyline intercooled 60mm throttle body engine in a 240Z. 2thumbs.gif

Its best to find a Haltech dealer who sets them up himself, he may have a 'get started' map to suit your application. Then fine tune it on his dyno.

 

This may sound obvious, but specialist knowledge can save you a lot of money and heartache compared with taking it to someone not familiar with Haltech.

I have one I put in my '78. I still need to get either a '83 turbo distributor or a magnetic signal converter...(last one I bought didn't work :rolleyes: )

 

Besides that its a nice setup...I think I have either a 2 or 3 bar....have too look at it when I'm home...(I put it in 2 years ago :D )

 

My brothers '73 L6 turbo (396 rwhp) is running a Haltech also....except he is running 12 injectors.

I have a Haltech on my '78 NA (soon to be supercharged) and like it.

You can't get an ECU that's easier to program, plus, the sequential additional injector capability (for more fuel under boost) is unique as far as I know for ECUs.

I used the stock 78 distributor feeding a MSD 6AL's magnetic trigger input, then took the MSD's tach output to trigger the Haltech. I've been really satisfied with the setup- I like electronic toys and have a MSD Vari-curve controller wired in to modify the advance curve of the distibutor.

My Haltech is an F9A.

I'm almost positive that all the haltech units use the same software - It's very intuitive and user friendly.

I just checked the Haltech web site- the E6k is a better unit than my F9. It includes ignition timing control and accepts an inductive input (like the '78 distributor's pickup coil) directly. You can also rig a crank trigger if you want.

This unit would be an excellent choice for a turbo car.

I've been looking at some of the MSD and Crane ignition boxes....

 

Question...wouldn't it be better to go with a turbo distributor as opposed to keeping the stock distributor and adding one of those boxes??

 

Your looking at 300 bones or so for the box, and you still have the crappy worn out distributor...

The turbo distributor needs the L28ET ecu to function. Possibly the later Haltechs can work with the turbo distrib with the built-in crank angle sensor?

I use a 90.00 rebuilt '78 distributor and it has been doing well. I think that most used Z dists have some kind of problem (most have the breaker plate advance bearings siezed or dropping out) after 25 + years - IMO it's not a bad setup.

Well, after some tech guy at MSD kinda blew me off and being a jerk, I called up Crane Cams and the tech guy told me they had a conversion kit for the L28 distributor.

 

It replaces the magnetic sensor with an optical unit.. Ordered it from Doug Herbert Thursday...

 

Maybe I can hear the car running by Wednesday :D ..

 

Provided I can get a MAP setup correctly.... eek2.gif

 

How hard is it to get the car running for the first time with the Haltech??

I didn't have very much trouble getting my NA daily driver running - created a program from scratch using the manual's recommendations. I can e-mail you my current program if you want- I'm almost :rolleyes: positive it will work on your system and get you started. The car this program runs on has an NA L28, moderate cam, and 250cc 280ZXT injectors. You would have to modify it for a 2- or 3-bar map sensor and fatten up the fuel in the boost areas for turbo use - pretty minor changes.

I also just found out that I need to take the vacuum advance off of the disrtributor and lock down the mech. advance also.... With the E6 the distributor cannot move.... (and I just fixed it right before I put the Haltech in twak.gif )

For what it's worth, the '81 L28ET used a crank angle sensor mounted on the timing cover, reading off the crank pulley. It's probably a bolt-on, retro-fit if it would provide a more practical signal than the distributor-source signal. DAW
