Guest Your Car is Slow
Ok...I just found this board and its like I hit the motherload of info for what im looking to do First off...I lucked out on finding a cherry 1970 240z that was 99% restored (interior/exterior/engine) for dirt cheap. I had been searching for a candidate to do a V8 swap in for quite some time before this gem dropped in my lap. Anywhoo....where I want to end up is as follows SP74/T88 powered 4bolt main LT1 in front of a BorgWarner T56 and with a rear end to handle 700ish rw (ford 9, or moser 12bolt or whatever would work best). In the back will be a set of 335/55 BFG drag radials (this will be a pure street car..no track time) mounted on an 11" wide set of centerline auto drags so i assume the sawzall will have to come out for that. My main questions lie in the rear end and suspension department. Currently the car runs and drives with the stock L24 motor...and id like to start adding mods to it that will work with that while I find and prepare a suitable LT1/T56 to swap in. People rave about those Tokico Illumina adj struts...so unless someone can recommend a cheaper and better solution...those seem to be the way to go. As for the rear end. What options do I have here? Are there any aftermarket manufacturers of beefy rear ends that swap into this car? Will I have to go hunt for a Ford 9 and have it shortened/worked by someone? I know someone has to have some sort of posi rear that will handle this kinda power and allow those large rims to mound under the stock fenders (and if its gotta be tubbed a bit..so be it). Anywhoo....I look forward to this project...its something ive wanted to do for quite some time. I hope I can find the help Ill need here! By the way..here are some pics of the car itself! SleeperZ
That is a beautiful car. Nice find! Are you sure you want to convert to a solid rear axle? For something that is 100% street, no strip, that is a rather radical conversion. I would think running street tires, you'd get as much grip with the IRS. Do you think you can hook up on the street enough to warrant the solid axle? Just asking...good luck with your project.
Guest Your Car is Slow
Dont know...hence posting here I just dont think the 180 or 200 will hold the kinda power I expect to be making when this is all said and done. You are right..I dont think any sort of rear will plant that much power on the street with drag radials...I was just mroe concerned about holding up to the abuse (moser 12bolt/ford 9) as it doesnt seem the stock IRS rears can handle those kinda numbers. Top Fuel ZX
the r200 can handle 9's but the halfshafts could be a concern. Maybe you should try the r230 that can be found on 300ZXTT as it should be able to hold that kindof power plus more. That way you get the best of both worlds, good handling and reliablity. Guest Anonymous
Keep the independent rear. Use an R-230 from an infinity Q 45 or nissan 300ztt. The R-230 is a little bigger that the ford 9 inch. I think it comes out to 9.055 inches so very similar size. You can get adaptors from Ross at http://www.modern-motorsports.com to put big CV jointed axels on it and you will need to make a front diff mount. For the rear of the diff, use an R-200 rear cover and it will bolt directly to the R-200 mustache bar. You will need to make the bolt holes on the R-200 rear cover a little larger, no big deal there. Other option for the rear of the diff is to use the finned r-230 rear cover, redrill the mustache bar and cut and reshape the bar under the mustache bar. Do a search on R-230 and you can find some pics that will make this a little clearer. Nice car!! Mark
