Guest Anonymous
I have an '83 280zx and I keep hearing people talk about adding a maxima head for performance and how cheap it is. Where can I get it? What is it?
Mike C
Nissan Maxima circa 81-83 had an L24 in it. This cylinder head, P79 I think, has the good combustion chamber shape, but small chamber for good compression. Start junkyard shopping. pallnet
not P79, it was N47 but different then the one on the 77-80Z's. i have not pulled one for myself. i seen to be pulling other part at the yard and not getting the time to pull one of these to see everything first hand. those are things that i know.. now things that i have heard... it has the good chambers. mate it with a flat top block and you get high compression but, managable. i heard this once that, the head is square port. i will know for sure oneday soon. blueovalz
In '79, I bought a Datsun 810 (I'm not sure the years that this car was produced). It was the predecessor to the Maxima. It had the L24 motor in it. Would this head be of any use too?
Guest jwcanfield
I'll apologize in advance if my ignorance is showing but ... Will a Maxima L24 head still work (ie. increase HP) on an L28 (83 280zx) if I have the block bored? JWC
denny411
Yes, it will work just fine.
Guest Tempe_Z
The Maxima/810 N47 has round ports not square. Think P79 with smaller chambers and that's essentially what it is. The Maxima cam is different than a Z cam and as I understand it the intake valve springs are weaker. You'll need to get a Z donor to swap these in. DAW is the expert on these things around here though.
DAW
TempeZ hit it right on the head, so to speak. You'll want to swap cam and intake valve springs with those from an L28 head. For use on a 2.8, especially with an overbore, you'll need to have the 44mm L28 intake valves and new seats installed into the L24 head to replace the 42mm intakes. I'd suggest you find a core/useable L28 head, either N42 or N47 (not P79 or P90) as the source for your donor valves, springs, and cam. P79 valves will be too short to use in the Maxima N47 head. BlueValoZ, I'm not sure about that early L24 810 head...if the same part# pistons and the same c.r. match up then I'd assume the head uses the same chamber as the later Maxima L24 heads.
