niceguy678us
I have been unable to find an answer in the archives. I am doing a turbo swap into a 280Z, and I have seen a few things mentioned about getting 300 crank hp out of a stock setup. I need to know what you turbo experts would do to achieve this small goal. I will be rebuilding the motor to stock specs (fresh), using the exhisting stock turbo, stock injectors, stock everything to maintain reliability. I've heard talk about gains with an intercooler, which one would you recomend? I'va also heard of gains with a "turbo controller" where do you get one??? What kind of gas mileage should I expect, and 1/4 mile times would something like this run "for shits and giggles"? I am looking at maybe even doing the starion OD tranny swap. Have any of you tried this, if so what are your impressions, what should I consider doing to it when I have it rebuilt? Please give me any and all info on this question. Thank you for your time..... scottyMIz
i did the same swap and i love mine when i ran mine at the track i ran a high 12 sec pass with the stock turbo and everything else except for the injectors i got 370cc ones and i had a volvo ic running 18 psi and it ran great. As long as you upgrade the injs you'll be able to get some good hp out of your z no prob.I never tried the starion tranny but i think james has one in his z.The only turbo contorller i used was a manual one abd it worked great.Hope this helps
Guest Zcarsmakemyheadhurt
Making the horsepower is mostly on the fuel injection system and injector size, I build turbos to customer need and most of the time again it would depend on your fuel injection. If you would like a small upgrade that will bring you right to 300hp at a reasonable boost level I would go with a TO4B compressor upgrade to your T3 turbo. You will have to do fuel injection upgrades no matter what but the turbo will make the power. If you would like to talk about a combination for you let me know. The upgrade can be done for $450.00 with no core. Alex Costa Costa Speed & Performance 305-888-3015
SleeperZ
With a factory Z31 ECU setup in my 280, stock injectors and regulator, stock L28 block and head, T3/TO4B V trim turbo and a good intercooler, I run low 13s, equivalent to 250-260 rwhp. That's close to 300 crank hp maybe, but it's the rwhp that gets you the ET, and a best trap of 107mph.
BayAreaZT
scottyMiz - Did you run the 370cc injectors with the stock fuel pump and ECU and did you have to adjust the air flow meter at all?
scottyMIz
yep i had to adjust the afm but everything else was stock and it worked great. One thing you might want to do it where the spring holds to the wheel of the afm you have to put in a screw or something to help hold the spring cuz the wheel is plastic and it'll eventually break loose from the wheel cuz of the stress. Guest Zcarsmakemyheadhurt
We are straying from the topic but I have never had or seen anyone have real success with larger injectors on a stock EFI. I have seen them run in the twelves but forget driving those cars in trafic with out a gas mask. I think I like a hi pressure fuel pump and a FMU. Or maybe additional injectors or both before trying to trick the factory ECM into slowing down the injector speed with any precision. Just my .02 cents, good luck. Alex C[/quote'] The only reason Scotty still ran rich was the AFM couldn't be adjusted enough, as it was out of it's linear range. It is more than possible to compensate the rest of the way with adjustable fuel pressure. I am in process of "tricking" the Z31 ECU with extra air, and I'll post on how well that works. I fully expect it to run like a factory car, as the 370cc injectors are not that big of a jump over the 260s, and the MAF is fully adjustable at idle. Lockjaw
On a stock ZXT HKS claimed 245 hp with thier exhaust, airfilter, and intercooler running 11-12 psi on stock efi. I am sure that is crank hp. You will be pushing the limits of the stock turbine trying to get 300hp out of it. I tend to agree with Alex in that you need to upgrade your turbo, and can attest to his work. I would also spend the money on a good intercooler, like a spearco or a griffen from RRE. You will need a good cooler. You can also run a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, but you need a really good fuel pump to make that work. Cartech has a peirburg which works well with their regulator, and can handle high pressure. I am not a fan of the larger injectors and adjusting the AFM. scottyMIz
when your poor it's the only way to go until you get the cash Mine did run really good with the afm adjusted and i did drive it as a daily driver. The car ran great a tiny bit rich but good and i could have adjusted the afm more to make it just right i was just too lazy .It is a good idea to get a good ic in the first place but if you can't afford one a volvo ic is more than adequate i don't care what anyone says about them mine worked great and better than the starion junk ones.If you need a cheap way to make the car go fast i can help if you need an expensive way to make it fast i'm prolly not the guy to ask
yo2001
Only problem that I'm getting with tighen down the AFM is that I'm getting 0volt reading from my )2 sensor@idle with all the accessaries on.
niceguy678us
How did the volve intercooler fit? Did you have to modify it to fit correctly through the two big radiator support holes?
scottyMIz
nope it fit just right the outlet and inlet are just about perfect to make the ic pipes go right thru. You might have to cut the holes a bit bigger to make everything fit like i did.I ran a line out from the afm to the front of the car so the airfilter would be out front instead of getting hot air from the engine bay.I have pics of the car but since they changed zdriver i have to cut all the pics down so they will be able to dl to the site. All my pics are too big file size wise to dl them all again.I could email them to you if you'd like also.
