Wishing for 'a Million Mogadishus'

A professor at Columbia University in New York is publicly calling for the massacre of American troops in Iraq and praising as heroes those who kill them, reports Newsday.

In a six-hour "teach-in" at the college, Nicholas De Genova, an assistant professor of anthropology, said he would like to see "a million Mogadishus" -- a reference to the city in Somalia where 18 American soldiers were ambushed and killed in 1993.

"The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military," De Genova told the audience of about 3,000. "I personally would like to see a million Mogadishus."

The crowd was pretty much silent in response to the remark, but cheered loudly when he later said, "If we really believe that this war is criminal ... then we have to believe in the victory of the Iraqi people and the defeat of the U.S. war machine."

A group of Ohio college students who wanted to hang U.S. flags on a school building were told they couldn't because the flags might hurt the feelings of anti-war folks, reports the Ohio News Network.

Melissa Paxton, a student at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, wanted to show support for the troops. "I was raised to be a firm believer in my country and you know, support what's going on," she said.

But Vice President of the Administration Ransom Clark feared the flags could cause problems. "I was afraid that a major display of American flags would represent a signal if done by the college to those people who are opposing the war that we're coming down against them," he said.

The students say they will hang flags outside of their homes instead.

End of excerpt....

All hope is not lost though, I had a few teachers who were no so leftist in their views. A few mind you, not a lot. In fact, one of my favorites was a Vietnam Navy vet and retired career military officer. Upon his military retirement, he became a professor. He wore his units' hat to school each day and didn't put up with leftists crap. He would always say that the rights and privelages of these students are a direct result of the sacrifice that he and many others who have fought and died for. Not showing respect for them, the flag or their country all of which are interrelated is in his mind disgusting. He would also offer those with very anti-american/establishment/gov't/etc...a plane ticket to anywhere they wanted to go in the world since the US was so "wicked". The only catch was that it was a one way ticket. :D Nobody ever took him up on the offer, but it did shut some people up.

What about the "feelings" of the pro-war folks? Also, i believe that college students are equal to high school students when it comes to protesting about anything.

They either

1)just wanna be heard, because when you are young, nobody listens to you and you need to earn a voice,....or

2)

What kind of day is today, where we wont wave our own flag for fear of pissing off the people that hate our country?.........

Does that sound like the beginning of an end to a civilization or what? This I ask of my fellow Romans...

I can't believe someone, let alone a professor, would say that they wish a million Mogadishu's upon the young men fight over their. I'm not a supporter of the war, but I am a supporter of the troops. Its not the troops doing the bad thing here IMO, but the leaders. It just bugs me that someone could wish that many American men and women would die. Just wishing that upon any people is wrong. UGGHHHH!!!! If I were to find one of those professors, they would not hear the end of it.

Believe it. That Professor doesnt' seem to understand that the very freedoms that allowed him to be a horses ass and make those ignorant comments would evaporate like muddy water on a hot July Day if his wishes came true. Bottom line is the Liberal press is NOT doing its job of reporting facts anymore. There seems to constantly be an agenda. Everyone in the media has their own direction, guided by motivations NOT in the name of the betterment of our country. I'm not saying "Don't report the truth because it might be negative!" But REPORT the EXACT FACTS as you see them, and DON'T give me your damned opinion because I don't NEED IT... That is why they are called REPORTERS!

Sheesh!

I personally think that the professor should be given a ONE WAY ticket to either IRAQ or Somalia, where he can live out the rest of his life in poverty and filth...and to think I am in the military and defend the right of him to say what he says, HMMMM What about my right to whip his A$$, for what he says, as he offends me....Damn Liberals, just one step away from Communism...

And as far as being politically correct....I DONT THINK SO...If saying exactly what I think, regardless of who is going to get pissed off, Im going to say it...My wife gets on to me all of the time because I tell the truth and call it as it is, she says its mean and I should consider what other people think...LISTEN UP PEOPLE, You need to develop some thick skin, and quit wwearing your FEELINGS on your sleeve, LIFE IS HARD, ITS HARDER IF YOUR STUPID!!

WANTaZ, your comment about YOUR free speach backs up what that professor said. He has that same right. Doesn't matter WHO is offended, He had the right to make THAT STUPID statement. I don't get the flag burning stuff either, but it is their supposed right to free expression.

Now look, you made me go and play devil's advocate for scum like that....

I'm a college student and man am I getting tired of this crap. People can protest all they want, it isn't going to change anything. I'm happy that my school has a majority of pro-war students and I have only seen a small group of people holding a candle-light vigil on a corner a few days back. I don't even think it was negative, I believe it was for the first few soldiers who died.

Now up in Austin which is pretty close by, protesters are coming out of the woodwork and accomplish nothing but riling the police up and getting themselves arrested for obstruction. I think it's ridiculous, if you have an opinion, good for you, you've learned to think on your own, just don't be ignorant and believe that you and 50 other people with signs are going to end a war in which half a million people are involved.

Free speech is a good thing, but why the hell do people use that right to deny support for people who are giving them the same right!?! Sheer blasphemy if you ask me, but hey, I'm not out walking the streets of Austin in a tye-dye shirt, dirty from not bathing in weeks, screaming like a girl to piss of police officers cuz I'm an anti-war hippy.

I have a strong dislike for anti-war hippies because my dad was a part of the Vietnam war and was negatively greeted by assholes just like that when he came home.

Ugh, ok.. [end rant]

Cliffs notes: I dont like anti-war hippies.

I'm for the war just to make that clear. In my experience it seems like most of the anti-war people are uneducated or unexperienced. Thats not to say all of them are uneducated or unexperienced, just most people ive talked to. They always fall back on how they dont want to see people die which is good except we live in the real world where people die every day and dentist don't give you suckers anymore when you get your teeth pulled. The biggest advocates for the war are usally iraqi's that fled Iraq because of Saddam killing off thousands of his own people and are willing to put up with more deaths to put an end to it. Who are we to say that their wrong? I don't go out to protest or argue my point for the war because I have faith that the government know's what its doing and It dosn't need me shouting my ideas which in the end wouldnt matter anyway. Everyones mind is already made up its not like you can change it. The only time I remember getting involved when a group of hippies (im not saying this to be mean they WERE hippies with hemp pants, peace patches, and tie dye shirts) got on the MAX (light rail) and started to tell everyone to oppose the war. I was quite taken to this really cute blonde hippie chick and started talking to her. Turns out she decided to not to go college and travel the US sorta like Kerouac which I thought was pretty cool. Anyways she wouldnt shut up and kept trying to change my mind on the war. FInaly i explained how the US spends hundreds of billions on its military and it should be used and how we can't stay home and deal with our own problems and let little things escalate like they did in WW1 and 2. She then said it was just "Wrong" and to drive the point home (not my own beliefs but i said it just for fun) I told her that the concept of right and wrong are simply social constructs and differ greatly accross the world. You can teach a child that killing and raping is right and he will defend that belief as strongly as she opposes it. She just shook her head in amazement and said something to the effect "These big words your using, u should be glad you go to school." All i could do is laugh cuz im not even an wordy guy. Anyways where was a going? I forget but yeah It seems like we used up all of our patriotism the month after 9/11. I'm proud to have buddies over there and wish them the best.

Agreed, right or wrong is something that is usually tought, some things are almost unanimous like beating babies to death, but even that has a place in certain societies. Eskimos and Chinese will both do it, and in China fetus' are even eaten for "health," yet this would seem discusting and wrong at least to me.

Just as the US is the great white devil to many in the middle east, and must be killed for living the way we do.

I'm seeing a little more media coverage than ever before. I'm not talking about being on the front lines and such, but more the point of views from different cultures. Not only that, but we do get to see at least an estimate of civilian casualties, which has never been done before. The objectivity of the press has always been a question, especially those from a capitalistic system. As for opinions, from what I've seen, it hasn't been too much from the the journalists, but from those they are interviewing. For the first time, we are also seeing interviews with civilians in the surrounding areas who's lives are involved. It is isn't all from a general's point of view. Not to say that their view doesn't matter, but it's not all there is.

Anyways, just makes me mad that someone as educated as a professor wishes death upon anyone. That person's degree should be revoked and they should be fired.

Well, he is just an assistant professor of Anthropology. :D

But I agree, it's quite amazing to believe that someone who is immersed in higher learning can make such comments. If I went to school there, I'd be organizing a protest against this jerkoff, citing that his political views have no place in Anthropological studies and if he wants to make such comments, do so on his own time and place, not the University.

It continues to amaze me that the very people who bask in the freedom of this country ridicule said country and their fellow citizens for the methods needed to provide it. I really would like to see how happy this guy would be if we just dropped him off in Mogadishu and let him fend for himself.

hey guys read this... kinda funny... kinda true....

there were protestors today in DC,they attempted to disrupt the metro system & block the Key Bridge,a leading artery into DC from Northern Virginia.there were protestors on the train platform handing out pamphlets on the evils of America.I politely declined to take one.An elderly woman was behind me getting off the escalator & a young female protestor offered her a pamphlet, she politely declined. The young protestor put her hand on the old woman's shoulder as a guesture of friendship,in a very soft voice said,&Ma'am, don't you care about the children of Iraq?&The old woman looked up at her & said, &Honey, my first husband died in France during World War II so you could have the right to stand here & bad mouth your country & if you touch me again.I'll stick this umbrella up your ass & open it.&

by the way, I didn't write this and I don't know who wrote this and am not trying to plagiarise anyone... just read it from my brothers away message on AIM

Dave240Z,

I believe the fore fathers of this country set it up so the citizens could scrutinize the leaders and the actions they take. Personally, I don't agree having our military in Iraq at the moment. It will not make us any safer, actually it will do the opposite. Terrorism will grow as a result of this.

There is a difference between actually looking at the facts and making educated guesses as to what will happen; and just throwing out uneducated words stating that people should die.

P.S. Are you going to the Rio Vista swap meet? I would like to meet some more of the guys from around the Bay Area.

Ok, just had to add my piece. The thing that irritates me the most, is that these anti-war college students really have no clue what this is all about. It's almost really amusing to hear their arguments until I realize that alot of these kids are going to school on my tax dollar. It's obvious that I'm wasting my tax dollars to pay for these kids to go to college to better themselves when it's become apparent the money could have been better spent by me on my Z. Is this our future? A bunch of people that so want to stand up for something, that they stand for something that they have no clue what it's about. Another funny thing about this is that alot of these kids are getting their information from Hollywood actors. A job that takes how much education?? Think the government will give me back my money????
