Another pan option

Recommended Posts

After crawling under Robs ZZ4 and taking a few measurements, I decided I don't need another nightmare of fitting exhaust around a road race pan. Found three more good possibilities this morning, all 7 qt+ with 7-7.5 depth. #s 1086, 1087, 1090. I'm leaning towards the 1090 8qt. Waiting for front pan dimensions. Pan bottom is only 11 inches wide. Really reasonable prices, too.

Moroso makes a "claimer" pan for roundy pounders. It's only 5 quarts, but has a scraper, baffles and windage tray for less than $150. I have a Moroso 20190 on my Camaro, 7 quarts plus filter, but I only run 5 plus filter for street/strip. One it minimizes windage, and two it gets two oil changes from a case. If I ever autocross, I top it off.

5 qt. pan is not for me. Good windage, scraper, baffling can go a long way, but 7000rpm potential and too many $$ invested. 7-7.5" sump is as low as I can go. This will give about 3" of ground clearance in my Z. Builder really wants 7 quart minumum. I've tried Milodon, Moroso, MWM, Stephs, Champ, Hamburger, ect, ect. Milodon drag pan 31145 is 7.5 rear, 6" front. With stepped front, will probably fit the Z nicely, really expensive.

So far Kevko is the most hopeful.

My catalog lists the Moroso 20190 @ 8". Otherwise it would be a great pan, I ordered my Kevko 8qt. Nice people! The right side kickout is only 3 1/8. Front of pan is 4 3/8. Rear, slightly over 7" Starter won't be an problem. I haven't gotten to the issues of which header I'm using, and how it will fit but this still might be a great option for those looking for high capacity oil pan with stock pan ground clearance.

Thanks Grumpy. Appreciate your suggestion. I had a bad experience, lately, with Midwest. Their tech help was extremely rude and didn't want to check their pan dimensions. I tried, but won't do business with them. Some of our applications are requiring a specific pan depth where 1/4 0r 1/2 inch makes a big difference. They wern't willing to share that info. I don't want to play trial and error with my engine parts.

There is a new pan in the Summit sale catalog. It is a 7qt pan for road race or roundy-round. It is only 7" deep sump and has no kickout to interfere. It is by Hamburger. Part # HAM-3047h. It is in the new products section of the catalog effective through April 30.

Hey john I was wondering If this will help you. I ran into a similar problem of not enough oil capacity, I also could not find a pan big enough at a price small enough. Then I looked at my other car. It has a front mounted oil cooler that is about 2.5" thick 8 inches tall and about 30" wide made of aluminum and has Banjo fittings on the inlet and outlet sides they can be found on all Mazda RX-7's made between 1986-1992 the JY's should have a few of them I got mine for about $25 I hope this helps. i've ran a remote dual oil filter kit before along with a cooler and it would take just shy of 8 quarts to fill completely. plus i found that after 3000 miles the oil would still be clear and unscorched. may help out with your ground clearance issues ;)
