Alternative to the Stock Air Cleaner?

I think I'm getting a little loss of power and I suspect it's from the dinky air cleaner. I would like to get something with better flow or at least something with the same cross-section as the air-flow valve. Maybe like one of those cold-air pipes? I think it might be better to just hack something out of a car at the JY, but which one?

Thx.

If you have the stock SU carbs (I can't tell from your email) you can cut your stock air filter housing with a jig saw and expose more area to the air fliter. K&N used to make a replacement filter for the SU carbs.

This is a common mod. I would use a spare housing from the junk yard.

I would buy a cone style K&N in a decent size, then go to the hardware store and buy a elbow ( 45 degree) aluminexzed or stainless tell pipe i believe they are 4" ( so the cone has to have a 4"opening) fit it in the stock hose from the AFM, and voila..

don't expect this to add 10 HP orso, it flos better, and on a stock angine it wont do Sh%t that is it might ad 1 hp, and make the engine pick up a lil better...but it is all the little things that help

You know, I have honestly never seen under the hood of a non-hybrid Z. I am quite familiar with many different aftermarket intakes so I could probably help you find one if I only new what the stock intake looks like :P. I will be checking out a 240Z for myself on tuesday so i can probably have a suggestion for you after that, or if you have a pic of your engine I can go off of that.

This is my old set up  , with a blitz cleaner, non K&N, I'm happier with my K&N they look like better quality cleaners, also this a 90 degree bent, withs is not as good as less degree bending ( smoother), and must be avoided if possible, cause wont be as smooth through a 90 degree bent

sorry this is the only pic i could come up with this fast

I would recommend something like frank280z. That puts the filter in direct air flow during speed. Maybe just pick up a filter at your local parts store. They sell many different varieties at my advanced autoparts store. Then uses use a 3 inch aluminum exhaust pipe that is a 90* bent piece and your in business without having to spend $120.00 to get one from MSA. You could hack up your stock one to allow more flow like sugestted earlier, if you needed a extra housing I have one from a 75 280z. I also have a K&N filter that goes with it I only used for a couple thousand miles. Its a tight fit getting door on the housing closed, but is made for this model car. Personnally I would go for a cold air induction with a cone though.

Personally I would go for a cold air induction with a cone though.

That's what I was thinking, but using parts from an intake system off a mass-produced car, like a Honda, Ford. I just need to know which models havethe 4-inch diameter.

I just got an air cleaner assembly (1997 Ford Escort 2.0) from the JY and it looks like it would work from the size of the exit hole, except that the hose bends the wrong way and the whole thing is too long to fit vertically next to the headlamp.

I don't like mounting it across the radiator, because I assume the air is hotter there; I would prefer to pick up some high-pressure air from down low.

So, can anybody suggest a source of 4 inch rubber hose? I think I will cut the assembly down in length and glue it back together with other mods, so it will fit down low behind the grille.
