Guest LightHeaded2ozKB
I posted this question on ZCAR.com and basically got flammed but ill ask here too. As of now my only car is my 74 260Z and before I can V8 i need a car to take me to and from work to the store ect. My dad is a big fan of the older BMWs and I really like the E12. Im sure a 260 with a 350 ZZ4 will tame my sports car addiction and I would like somthing that i can fit more that one other person in. What do u guys think? Phantom
I have always liked BMW's but have stayed away from them because of the high cost of parts & maintenance. My "daily drivers" have been other Z-cars, a Toyota Corolla, a Nissan Sentra, a Ford Pinto, and an old Volkswagen beetle.
Mike C
We have a 95 325is E36. It has been phenomenally reliable, and parts are no more than most late model cars. One of the selling points was a chain instead of a timing belt, but that older one is a belt cam drive. Stay away from the V8s, first class POS. Look at the classifieds and see the % with new motors and you'll see what I mean. I looked at buying a 98-2000 528i 5 speed, but decided the 95 Impala SS Ibought was a better choice for me for parts and maintenance as well as being half the price... BMW is a great car, but for a driver try to avoid the pitfall that gets me. I buy something that is "cool" (at least to me...) and then I want to work on it also! So instead of 1 project I get 2, then 3, and so on until everyone looks at you kind of crooked.
Guest LightHeaded2ozKB
im the same way mike. The 5 seris I want ist the 530 that has a V6 with 165hp.
Tim240z
Yup, I'm the same way. Buy something to drive while I'm working on the V8, then end up spending time and money on the daily driver. It happene when I bought the ZXT....put clutch stuff in, then a BOV, then had a spacer made for the 240sx TB, then had a 3.5" DP made, then..... Now I've caught myself looking in the catalogues for hop up parts for the 1994 Z28 that I just bought.....I told my wife to slap me....she gladly obliged!! Those old Beemers are great cars though!! Lots of torque and handle nicely. Tim

Drax240z
I haven't got much experience with that particular model, but a buddy of mine had a 79? 530i and loved it. He drove the piss out of the car for 1.5 years and had to replace: - The speedo cable. Yeah, thats it. He hit a pylon and that ripped it out. Guest benjlv
get a ealry 90s camry...slow...economical and will run with tranny fluid so old its green.... BTW the sotck timming belt is good for 60 or 80k on those cars but will go 168k before snapping. other than that, thats it thats needed to be replaced, well other than the rust. the car nails down 25mpg in the city and wont have you even thinking about it to hop up or maintain. Guest LightHeaded2ozKB
The main reason I want an older BMW is because I never see any. I get bored with the same old cars that i always see. When was the last time you saw an old BMW 1600 or 2000 or even a 2002. I rarely see any but I know they are out there. I found this beatuful picture of an 67 1600 convertible. Maby Im crazy but I think thats a beatuful car even thou it only has 90hp, but it does get 30mpg...

DavyZ
My dad had a 1600 and it was fast! Not drag strip fast but pretty darn quick. He picked it up in Germany and kept it for years. It was neat car--loved the silver paint, the black and burgundy plether interior...ever notice how old BMWs smell the same inside? I was wishing for a 2002 in high school, but my bro and I settled on a trick 510 and the rest is history... Davy
Guest LightHeaded2ozKB
It seems as if Davy actually understands why I want on old BMW.
