randy 77zt
i know this has been kicked around but i want some answers.my 77 z is used as a daily driver but also gets used for open track and driver schools at thunderhill, sears point, laguna seca.i have spent years swapping parts to get the car to handle good enough to run against trailered race cars.engine is a 81 zxt.the 302 is simple and cheap-i work as a tech at a ford dealer.i want more power, better weight balance, less parts under the hood.i would bet that a 302 long block is lighter than a turbo l28 with same parts mounted.302 would have aluminum heads.main problem is keeping the car handling the same or improving it.no weight can be added to the front.car is 1350 lbs front 1270 rear. fl327
since you work at a dealership, i bet you can get a good deal on an r302 block, 4 bolt main alloy 302 teamed up with gt40 heads and the E cam, youll dust fools with that setup and i bet it will handle something fierce, since the motor would weigh very little, and the dist in the front you could shove that thing very far back and probably pick up weight in the rear from the swap! blueovalz
My personal experience in dealing with the weight of a SBF (289/302) is this. Aluminum heads, aluminum flywheel, cheap but light aluminum water pump, light aluminum manifold w/carb (some aluminum manifolds are quite heavy), and moderate medium length headers ran it just at 400 lbs (actually it totaled to 390 lbs, but I may have not had the distributor and some other small stuff added correctly. It was actually lighter than the same parts-for-parts as the L24 that it was swapped out for.
randy 77zt
back in my younger days i could pick up a bare 302 block and carry it.i never could lift a l28 block.plan is for a solid roller lifter ,aluminum head 302 built for 7000 rpm.the hydraulic roller lifters are heavy.so you need big valve springs.not good-you are losing power opening the valves up. Mudge
I've carried a short block, but with heads/intake forget it, flat out too bulky anyway I think. Should improve weight distro since it sits further back, I've been dreaming of the 5 oh myself.

Guest bluex_v1
74_5.0L_Z, was that weight with your new tube front end or stock?
74_5.0L_Z
That was with the stock chassis. I haven't yet weighed the car after redoing the chassis, though I expect the car to weigh less, and the rearward bias to be even more. I'll keep you posted.
