Guest Willieboy240z
Inspired by posts I read here, I have modified my fuel door to a brushed aluminum aftermarket part designed for a Mazda Miata. I got the mechanism from a junkyard and ordered the alum door off the web. Unlike the motorcycle tank lid conversion I abandoned earlier, this mod does not require any changes to the stock gas cap or pipe. And your gas supply is secured without needing a key. The remote control switch was mounted beneath the console. I had originally thought it would be mounted in the more traditional location to on the floorboard/rocker panel area, but later decided just to put it here so I didn't have to find another cable. Very smooth operation.

jeromio
That does look mighty nice. Is the old hole welded up? Filled with lead, bondo?
BayAreaZT
Nice work . I was wondering also if you welded up the old hole first. I am going to try using a bullitt mustang fuel door when it's time for body work. No cable needed.
timh
I bet that's a new quarter panel, and didn't have a cutout?
Guest Willieboy240z
A fair amount of cutting (including from the inside) was required. Gaps filled with sheet metal with some bondo here and there. Also, the car has shaved doorhandles, locks, decklid latch lock deleted side markers, badging, pillar vents combined fenders/headlight buckets

j260z
this is the kind of work and attention to detail that keeps me coming to this site every day. awesome work!! of course, that being said, now you must divulge your secrets. where did you order that door from and what mechanism are you using? DavyZ
Extremely nice work, not to mention functional too By chance, did the door have a slight curve in it to match the quarter panel curve of the Z? Your work looks 'factory' only using custom parts Me like. Davy
t-tom
I love that color! Makes me not want to paint my fairlady yellow.
Guest Willieboy240z
The door came from a website that featured Mazda Miata parts. I can't remember the name -- it was about a year ago. The mechanism came off a run-of-the-mill Miata I found in a junkyard. Here's a source for the fuel door. http://www.miatamania.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=33157 The door is pretty much flat. The color of the car is BASF yellow tint, pretty much straight out of the can.
niceguy678us
I just went to the J/Y and looked at a recked miata. Did you cut out a patch of the sheet metal from the miata and graft it into the datsun quarter panel? I was wondering if I needed to hack out this chunk out of the Miata so I could have the latch mechanism ( I know you just undo that 14mm nut and the part will slide out) I mean the female part of it located on the door. Guest Willieboy240z
No, I didn't. But it sounds like it might be worth trying....
niceguy678us
sweet, I PM'd you thinking you might not see this before you left the forum, just wanted to make sure as I am going back to the J/Y again to pick up these parts. Thanks again for the miata parts link!!!
