JoeinCA
Hey guys, i have a pretty nasty oil leak from the front of my engine's oil pan. Now, i was wondering if you guys had any good methods for getting rid of oil leaks.. I do not have time to pull the engine again. One person suggested that i just loosen the bolts and then go through and tighten them in the correct order. If anyone can tell me the correct way to do this, it would be much appreciated. Also, i think that my transmission is leaking from the speedo housing... any advice? Thanks, Joe
Guest BigWhyteDude
for the oil pan gasket you will probly have to get a new one. B/c it is probly saterated with oil and will probly contenue to leak even if you tighten the bolts down. But if ytou want to try it tighten every onther bolt untill they aretight enoguh to hold the pan up against the block. then tighten every other bolt on the pan. (skip one tighten one etc...) look upthe TQ recamendations for the oil pan bolts an tighten them to the specks. And hope for the best. Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
For the tranny leak I would probably just take it to a shop. I normally fix everything myself but a little leak like that from that location is not likely to cost you very much, and it is likely to come back. If you take it to a shop then you can take it back when/if it starts leaking again. And make them work on it for free. For the oil leak you are almost guaranteed that it will come back if you just try to tighten the bolts now. You also risk overtightening and warping the edge of the pan. I would just save a headache and do it right. Drain the oil, pull the pan, clean both surfaces with a good shop towel and put in the new gasket. When tightening the bolts back up be sure to switch from side to side on the pan as well as tightening them in the every-other-one sequence. This is necessary to make sure that you dont over-tighten one side when tightening the other. Also be sure to check the torque specs because pan bolts normally are supposed to only be tightened down just enough to be snug. You can easily go way over the torque specs if you are not careful. (I believe they are normally around 20-26 lb/ft which is very easy to go past).
JoeinCA
i probably already warped the pan... I have 2 others sitting around though... it would suck if i messed up my nice chrome pan... serves me right for buying a useless shiny thing. Guest Bamm Bamm
Get a Solid one piece rubber oil pan gasket. they sell them over at Monument near the County East Mall, IIRC.. That solved the last oil pan leak on my 73 pickup.. Don't waste your time with those 4 piece oil pan gaskets sets..
Guest Bamm Bamm
Summit sells new pans for like $30 I think I paid for my last one. I porbably have a few SBC pans around if you need one.

JoeinCA
Do you guys think i will be able to pull my pann off of my engine without pulling the motor? i really dont feel like removing the engine... Joe
JoeinCA
I found this link here that has the torque specs for chevy engines... it says that the poil pan bolts are only supposed to be tightened down to 12 ft lbs. and the valve covers to 3 ft lbs. http://www.2quicknovas.com/torque.html Joe
Owen
Joe, I had the same problem, I pulled the pan with the engine in the car and replaced it with a 1-pc seal from Canton Racing. While you're at it, ARP stud bolts make things a lot easier putting the pan on. Owen
Tim240z
Yeah the one piece rubber gasket is a godsend! I installed one on my LT1...no messing with sealant at the front and rear joints etc....great stuff...well worth it, and they can be reused over and over and over! 80LS1T
I just noticed something in one of your previouse post on this subject...."useless shiny thing" So does that mean you have a chrome oil pan? Cause if you do you have to scuff up the gasket area or it will continue to leak even with a 1 piece gasket! Jusg get out some fine-meduim grit sandpaper and scuff it up and that should stop it from leaking wih the new gasket on there! Guy
JoeinCA
I dont think it is leaking anymore... I am NOT going to remove the oil pan again. (at least, not within the next few months.) when i do i think i will put the oil pan studs in like owen suggested. thanks for the advice guys. i didnt even know that one peice oil pan gaskets existed!
