Guest DaMeat
Well, I think I got a complete LT1 motor and tranny but am a little concerned about O2 sensors(I didn't pull it myself, but it was fairly cheap and it looked complete) So does an LT1 have these, or if not how does it check the lean and rich burning of the cylinders? I don't see any bungs welded on Tim240s headers so am I OK without them, or did he put them more downline? Hopefully the motor is going in tomorrow, but I can access the turndown pipes if I need to weld the O2 sensors on them later. Thanks for the replies... Guest 240SBB
Yes. It might even have two (my 1996 LT1 had two). But one for sure.
mas28O
You should have one on each side.
Tim240z
Yes my headers have O2 bungs. They are near the collector pointing to each other on the inside (pointing towards the flywheel). You can pretty much bet that any car from early 90's up has O2 sensors. If you need O2 sensors, get them from the GM dealer (AC Delco), not the Bosch ones from the parts store. Dan Juday
Definitly has two. The older tpi motors had one. And congrats on your find. '95 is the most desirable model year for the swap.
Guest DaMeat
Thanks Fellas, I thought they did, but after all the searching I couldn't see them in any photos (Or even evidence of them). Down to Speedmerchant to get a couple bungs, and get them welded on. You guys inspired me to look around a little more, and I stumbled across this page: http://www.csce.uark.edu/~jgbertr/rb/4th_gen_tech2.html Which has all the wiring for my computer... I think this is enough for me to rewire it myself, and no need for a Helm manual. Woo hoo... I was just about to buy one. (If I have troubles I will buy one though). I do love this site... Tim240z
BTW, you can also use 14mm spark plug anti-foul inserts dor O2 bungs. Cheaper and available at any parts store. Just cut off the end piece. that's what I used. Tim
Mike C
I have learned recently of the existence of Caprice SS cars that were for export, most likely to the middle east. They still use premium leaded fuel over there, and the LT1 cars were not equipped with converters or 02 sensors. They ran open loop all of the time, which seems idiotic to me, not taking advantage of all of the technology available. But that's the way it is, and when gas is 15 cents a gallon for 100 octane leaded or whatever they pay, you can't complain too much about poor mileage. But your chances of finding one of these cars is virtually nil, so the answers you got above are correct for a US delivered car. I am not sure how the marine LT1 engines are handled. They may not have O2 sensors either would be my assumption. I always wondered how simple a Mercruiser LT1 wiring system and computer would be. It also may be that marine applications have a surge tank type pressure pump near the engine for the FI and an inline pump to get gas from the tank. This might be an ideal swap for converting an old car to FI and not having to contend with baffling or converting the gas tank.
