Blueoval, I think the capacity is 16 gallons. I chose this paticular one because it had the neck for a hose rather than the filler hole actually being on the fuel cell. With this cell I can run a hose to the existing filler opening on the quarter panel, which will have either a miata or motorcycle gas cap. the cell hangs down just far enough so that it can be seen from behind just barely. It will also be visible from the inside. If I coulds change anything, it would be to have the outlets for the lines on the bottom rather than the top. This is going to be a show car with, hopefully, plenty of "go" but We didnt disign anything for racing.

 

Wagz, thanks! You may want to add a few suports to the tubes that "hang down" and bolt to the fuel cell. We are going to go back and add those to strenghten the mount, its pretty sturdy the way it is but it wont hurt.

How tall is the driver. Looks to be good for a 5'8" guy at best. That cage will severly limit the travel of the seat. Don't mean to be an ass but that is the only thing I don't like about my cage and it is to late to change mine. Nice idea on the fuel cell. Mark

I found that too when I mocked up my rollcage. I had to space the seat brace back by 2 inches. I'm 5'11". It's also a factor of the angle of the seat back of my Corbeaus.

If I had it to do over again I would have remove the package shelf and place the main hoop back about 8 inches, this would have put it in the area of the small compartment doors. Your car will be much more fun to drive if you can fit in it comfortably. Mark

How tall are you Mark?

With my seat brace back 2 inches, I have plenty of room. The door brace is going to make entry and exit a total PITA (probably literally), but it's not a daily driver, so I'm not worried about it.

I'm 6'4" so leg room is at a premimum. Also I need to recline a bit when I'm in the car (old back) so that make it even worse. It's not a daily driver as you say so it is OK but I wish I had paid more attention to seat position when the cage was being installed. Mark

First of all Chip,

 

Nice work. From someone in doing the same thing i currently i can appreciate the time and effort going into your installation. I was shocked at how much effort is required to do such an install. I am concerned for your because I am 6'1" and have been struggling with several of the same issues that you will have to contend with.

 

Looking at your roll cage I see that the main hoop is pretty far forward in the driver/ passenger compartment. I had to push mine back to just in front of the dome light location so that i could drive my car with a helmet. Will you have enough clearance?

 

Also I noticed that your cross bar on your cage is even with your hoop which may not allow you to recline your seats so that you can drive your car in some comfort.

 

Lastly, I do not recall seeing a cross bar to protect you in a roll over. A diagonal bar that will support the main hoop in case of a roll over...

 

These are things that you might want to consider, as I said before it is very clear that you have put a lot of work into your car, it would be a shame to have to rework any of your project at a later date.

I just finished installing a cage in mine. I was very concerned about space, so I tried to get the main hoop as tight to the B-pilar as possible. I am extremely happy with the way it came out. I can lean the driver's seat back just as far as before the cage. The main hoop fits so tight at the front of the quarter window that I couldn't squeeze masking tape between the bar and the pillar. To get the spacing I wanted, I mounted the main hoop on top of gusset plate that are weled to the shelf above the seat belt monts and welded to the rocker panel. Here are some pictures showing the fit.

Thanks guys,

The pictures will be a great help as I go back and redo the rollbar. This is the first time I have done a restoration of a car. My friend who is helping has done a bunch. We just eyeballed the fit of the rollbar. Should have done more research. He is only about 5'6" so he probably thought it was fine!

haha, not fitting into cars is my specialty, im 6'9" so when i go to install my cage (more like a 6 point bar probly) im going to make it very tight to the roof and set it back to about the area by the front of the wheel wells and the edge of the luggage riser. hopefully i can get it in tight enough to the wall that it wont interfere with reclining... ive seen this somewhere, just cant remember which gallery it was...
