Tim240z
For you guys using the T-56, what are you using to seal the hole in the tunnel where the shifter goes through? The stock Datsun boot doesn't have enough flexibility to take all the travel of the shifter...I've tried it upside down, back-to-front, inside out etc (literally), but no dice. I had a look at the one in my Z28 (1994), and it looks like it may do the trick. Any suggestions? I have a leather boot for the shifter installed, but that will do little to cut sound and air (hot and cold).
jeromio
I bought a cheap-ass shifter cover from AdvancedAuto (Kragen for you west coasters). It's an accordian rubber mojobbie with a trim ring. It had a sort of slotted hole like it's meant for an old 60s Hurst-style shifter, but my round shifter shaft fits through. I put a bead of gasket cement around the edge before installing it.
mas28O
Tim I have the same boot from Kragen. Works good, I went to the junk yard to find a nice one but no luck. Tim can you tell me how to post a pic large? Everytime I post it is small.
mas28O
The pic worked this time. Mike
JMortensen
Look at the 280ZX boot. I think it comes with a metal flange that you can sheet metal screw (or use nutserts and capscrews if you want it to be fancy) to the tranny tunnel. Looks very similar to what the other guys have, but a little cleaner IMO. Jon
Tim240z
Thanks guys, but that universal one that you guys are referring to will interfere with my nice leather shifter cover. I need something that will lay kinda flat for the inner boot. I'll have a look at the ZX one too. I might just have to take the rubber one out of my Z28 to see if it will do the trick then just buy one from GM. Tim
mas28O
Tim if you are looking for a inner boot then buy one from a 79-93 mustang. They have a inner and outer boot.
dot
Tim: Jeep TJ uses an inner boot that fits flat. It might be too wide, depending on the size of the hole. Cheers!
Guest Anonymous
Inner tube and duct tape, Sorry not JB weld this time. Mark
Mike kZ
I used the stock 240 inner boot, but cut it down some. Then I weaved in a long tie rap and tightened it around the shifter. I put the console back on, and the stock outer boot fit well over the shifter.
jeromio
Oh, mine is similar, but nearly as extreme as mas280's. It is much flatter. I actually have my console and homemade suede shift boot over mine. (BTW, I made the boot from a black pigskin suede miniskirt that I bought at the thrift store for $1)
mas28O
Jeromio That is your old 4l60e shifter in that pic.
jeromio
Ah yes, I remember it fondly. No wait, what I remember fondly are the car budget dollars that you gave me in exchange for it Just re-read my post and what I meant to say was not nearly as extreme.
