240Z2NV
Season's Greetings to all of the members from a 'newbie'/lurker. I hope that you are all healthy and happy. This is my first 'open' post, so go easy with the FLAMETHROWING I have a bit of a dilemma and invite anyone so inclined to offer up your .02. No need to berate, just tell me what you'd do. With about the same estimated expense (~$10k) would you a) restore a '70 240Z to its original glory or do a V8 conversion on a '72/'73 ? I have an opportunity, with both cars available and obviously cannot do both. So, what d'ya think? P.S. All the best in the New Year! JKDGabe
Merry Christmas and welcome! As to what we would do... this is HYBRIDZ! Most of us I daresay would modify rather than go back stock. I guess the deciding factor for me would be what I'm gonna do with it. Weekend driver only or...?
Dan Juday
Both are worthy projects. I won't say it's up to you because you already know that, and you asked what would I do. I can appreciate a concourse restoration of a fine classic. It takes a tremendous amount of work and a devotion to the mark. But, that's not what I would do. For me my Z is an outlet for my creativity. Making beautiful, elegant, or ingenious things is a compultion for me. I can only go so long without an outlet for that compultion. Restoring something back to someone elses concept just don't do it for me. Now, where's that Sawzall?
datsunlover
My thoughts as well... a friend of mine is constantly telling me 'Comon man, you should restore your car to original cause it'll be worth more in the end, and it's a really rare car...' ect, ect.... Well, first of all, I don't have the $$$$$ it takes to properly restore it, and I need to do SOMETHING to it performance wise... I think my 280 looks way better with out the bumpers, a front air dam added, ect. I also have the need to 'go fast' and an engine swap is in my future.. I hope! The 2.8 is a good engine, but not awe inspiring as far as HP and Torque #'s go.. And this way I can drive the car evrywhere and just enjoy it. I think if I had a 10K resto job, I'd be afraid to take it out as much...
Chaparral2f
I modify everything I get my hands on. That's what led me here in the first place. what ever you decide, the great thing about this site is that you will have access to a huge pool of knowlege, and a group of people who are willing to share it. Tim240z
Well, you've gotten my 10c worth Go V8!!! Tim
Wagz
If I could do both projects, I would. But, if you can only do one and this IS HybridZ after all, go V8 and get creative. My opinion is only worth $.
240Z2NV
First, Thanks very much to those of you who chose to give me your .02 (for Tim, it is comparatively .75)! I realized after I sent the post that I made a big faux pas in such a question on a board that's focus is MODIFYING, so...dumb question. I still appreciate a different (or similar) perspective. I have the attention to detail to do a near-concours restoration; but, like you gentlemen I have a to exercise my individuality. And, ther's no replacement for displacement Gotta have GO!! The reality is that I likely could not have as much fun in a plain, albeit rare, '70 240Z. I have modded my last few 240s, and this time should go all the way with the V8 conversion. I may never get my 'investment' back; but, I'd also be foolish to think of any car project as an 'investment'. Its a labor of love, right.....can I get a "Hell yeah"?! And, I feel fortunate to have found this site to benefit from so many experiences, and generous people like Tim. Again, thanks!
