z31 coil into 240z questions

I have a 72 240z N/A SU l28 w/ 81 coil/ignition/dist. I was considering an aftermarket coil, but i found out about the z31 coil swap which would be much easier.

How different is the wiring? i.e. does anyone have a wiring diagram (or instructions)?

Does the z31 have an ignition module that can be swapped too?

Thanks in advance,

Luis

I used the wiring diagram out of the Chilton's manual (the '70-'89 Z and ZX book). It is electricaly the same as the 280ZX turbo, using a power transistor as a current amplifier and signal inverter.

Personally I'd get the coil and trigger with wiring out of a scrap Z31, and wire the whole thing in according to the Chilton's wiring diagram (or the FSM if you can find a copy-I found all models of Z FSMs at my public library).

I've been using the Z31 coil for two years now after running the original 280ZXT coil. I've not had any trouble, and no misfiring under 16psi boost with a 0.035" plug gap.

Am I imagining it or did I read somewhere that the Z31 (or it might have been Z32) coil is NOT an oil filled type like the stock early Z coil/MSD coil/etc.? I do seem to remember someone recommending one of these over say, the MSD Blaster 2 that I'm using.

So, the Z31 coil has the 'little black box' unit attached to it or is it attached to a bracket or something like the early ZXT? Is it really hooked up exactly the same as a 280zxt coil and black box? If it is the same then I'm already set up for it :) I havent really had any problems with the Blaster 2 but the one I have is old and just about time to be replaced, and I can get used Z31 coils pretty cheap, and everyone saying they are better... so why not?

Can anyone post a pic or two of the Z31 coil, in or out of a car?

Its just a coil, good thing is that on a z31 you can pull a bracket off it that holds both coil and transistor, and then find a way to bolt it into same place as the z with the stock coil bolt holes.

get the thing by itself, man its just a coil...

I thought the Z31 coil was shaped differently, like a square boxy thing? Or was that the Z32?

The '81-83 ZXT coil also has the transistor mounted on the bracket that the coil mounts in... are you saying I can use the '81 transistor with the Z31 coil? Or do I NEED the Z31 transistor as well?

you can use just the coil, its just like any coil except it looks cooler i think.

good idea to swap out both, makes replacement easier since plenty of z31 cars turbo and na that use the same transistor.

coil is just positive and negative, cant remember too clearly but one of the wires is the same color off the coil, and the one that is different goes to the other side of the coil, only two possible combos not hard at all.

z32s use individual coil packs.

sure looks like the same transistor as the 280zx turbo...

I thought the thing had a different shape to it too. heh to be honest I cant really tell exactly what I'm looking at with that pic!! I'm gonna see if I can't swing by a junkyard to get a better look, or just ask them to show me one at Autozone or something. I gotta guy who probably has a few used ones he'll sell me for cheap.
