onephatz
dohc V-8 w/ tranny will be avaible if I want it. anyone ever done such a thing before? jesse
JMortensen
You do realize that the 928 has a transaxle and a torque tube like a 944 or a new Vette, right? Those transaxles aren't light either and parts would be extremely expensive. That would be one hell of a project and damn near impossible, but I think it fits under the how much money/time/fabrication experience do you have category. All that for ~300 hp out of the DOHC version in stock form. Jon
onephatz
You do realize that the 928 has a transaxle and a torque tube like a 944 or a new Vette, right? hummmmmm no I don't know that. and lemme guess there is nothing that will bolt to the block? yea lots o fabracation. I'm into custom fabbin some things but that would be a little much for me. was wondering cuz friend of mine is picking up three and said one is for parts and could sell me the motor cheap if I could do anything with it. oh well jesse
j260z
i've heard that the 928 is a really nice car to drive... if you can keep it running. the engine runs well but needs constant adjustment to keep it performing well, not to mention parts are a small fortune. Guest porschephile
Yeah, the 928 has a rear tranny layout. IMO, that would be way too much fabrication. The 928 engines are very nice as far as power, when it comes to the Euro S versions and DOHC versions (the early SOHC v8's were pretty underpowered). You could always swap the whole engine, torque tube assembly, and tranny into your Z chassis and convert it to the rear tranny layout. Though, that would be TONS of cutting and welding to fit that tranny in the rear. Still, it would be interesting to see the handling characteristics/balance after doing such a thing. That's one of the reasons the 944 handled so well for a stock production sports car.
Guest vegeta
A friend of mine was interested in buying a 928 once, because it was really cheap due to needing a rebuild on the engine. He had the pistons priced.....................are you ready for this?.....................$3,000 forget that ............
johnc
Yeah, Porsche parts are expensive, but in racing they last so over the course of a season or two, Porsches are generally cheaper then most cars that run in the same classes.
280zinsanity
well, i wonder how cheap, and if he really can get these parts, then we can see what it could really be like to have the 928 setup in a 280z
