Drax240z
It's been quite a while since I posted anything about my car and how it's going. Now that I am at work a couple hours early I have a chance to recap a bit. (for those that might be interested) The car: 72 240z L28ET swap I drove it from July-November last year for the first time and loved it. In November I took it off the road for the winter and to do some mods. It's May now and I should have been driving this car for the last month, but owning your own business can really sap away your time. Over this winter I have added 440cc/min injectors, Walbro fuel pump, medium NPR intercooler (upgrading from the small one), Recaro seats (got a good deal on a wrecked rally car), powdercoated & ported N42 intake, aluminum fuel rail, braided SS hose/hardline for the entire fuel system, turbo hood vent, new oil pump, large oil cooler, etc. I've also spent a large amount of time re-wiring some things, including the removal of a lot of wire made redundant from the SDS installation. The next parts to go on the car are coilovers (225f/250r) with sectioned strut tubes, and illumina inserts. Following that is the roll bar I have half fabricated. I'm debating whether to do this stuff now or just get it on the road and drive a bit before to work out other bugs. Also in my infinite wisdom I started doing the bodywork where it was needed... Not sure where this fits into my schedule or how far I'll go with it right now. Anyway, that is a bit of an update on my project. I hope to be knocking on the door of 260rwhp with this setup. (SDS, 440cc injectors, medium NPR IC, 60mm TB, stock turbo) I think ~300rwhp is just a 3" mandrel bent exhaust & downpipe away at this point, but I've promised myself to address the braking situation more completely before adding more power. (I'm still running stock brakes, though in good condition) With the brake upgrade comes my 5 bolt conversion, and some new shoes too. (16x8" RX7 wheels & some sticky meats yet unpurchased) Anyway, this is time I could be working on my car so I am going to stop now. Z ya! Drax240z
I also decided that I was tired of driving a multi-coloured car! So in the midst of my reassembly, I painted the car satin black. It isn't overly beautiful, but I did spend a fair bit of time on bodywork and I wanted to protect that work with something. I am not sure if I am going to stay with the no bumper look or not... It was mostly because I did an all nighter to get the car ready for an autocross, and I was too tired to put them back on. There are no shots of it but I installed a GSX-R gas cap as well, which fits really well with the black/chrome theme. I also swapped in the Hyundai marker lights which I really do prefer. Roll bar, coilovers and a few other goodies should go in this weekend.
BillZ260
looks great! I want to see that gas cap!!!
tannji
Not beautiful? Well... perhaps it looks a little too dangerous, or mean, to be beautiful.... but I would hit it if it were a woman.... I love that look. (come to think of it, my preferences have probably caused me more woman problems than car.... go figure) There was a movie I saw back in the 80's... cant remember the title, plot, or actors... but I do remember a bevy of 240Z's in flat black the bad guys drove around and abused.... your car reminds me of them.... Really wish someone could remember the movie, I would like to see the chase scenes again.

zero
I am loving the satin black, what process did you go through to get it looking so nice. I know another member, SBC_400 rolled his on. Did you? Either way, it looks very nice. Also, I know you've done your bodywork already, but how well do you think a satin job would hide small imperfections, because I am entirely to inexperienced to do lots of bodywork. Thanks alot and you have a gorgeous car.

Guest comeandzpa
The black satin looks great! Furthermore, I'll add to the Homestar props. Way to be! Also, I agree with the bumperless crowd, it looks badass.
Guest bastaad525
Car looks fantastic... I've always loved the 280zxt hood vents on the 240. Put the passenger side one on as well!! The more I see 240's in that satin black (think this is the 3rd one now?? who was it that applied it with a roller??) the more I LOVE it!!! I want this paint on my car! Drax... was this a spraycan job or what?? I need to get as much info as possible on this kind of paintjob... I dont think I'm gonna try it with a roller but I know that the $200 earl scheibb paint job I got isn't going to last forever and at some point I'm gonna strip it off and go with this awesome, mean looking satin black. Please give us some info on what you used and how you got it looking so nice! BTW... imo, replace the front bumper, leave the rear one off those pics are almost 100% exactly how I wanted my car to look whenever it will finally be done... I want that same BRE rear spolier as well.
Drax240z
Thanks for all the kind words guys. A little info on the paint: I started with 5 spary cans of pro-form etching primer, and followed that up with 11 (yes, 11) cans of Plastikote T-8 Satin Black paint. It was quite difficult to get decent coverage with the spray cans, and honestly I don't think I'd do it this way again. Recently I just found that Duplicolor makes premixed primer and premixed paint (with hardener, reducer, etc. mixed in) and I have access to a spray gun. It would have cost me the same in materials either way, but I think the result would be a bit nicer with the premixed stuff out of a real spray gun, and likely there would have been less waste. This paint looks decent from ~5' but any closer than that and well... it's only a spray can job so don't expect that much. I had another motive for using this too, I am hoping to paint the car "for real" next winter and a satin black guide coat will really help me get the car straight. I was surprised with how well the satin black hid imperfections. It is much more forgiving than a gloss black, that is for sure! Homestar rules! For those of you that has no idea who Homestar is, all I can say is go to http://www.homestarrunner.com and spend a few minutes going through the '1st time here' cartoon. One guy at the track said: love the "i'm gonna bite ur head off" look and the "yea i'm biting ur head off right now" sound to the engine I'll see if I can get some pics with the gascap in the next few days.
