BobsZTwins
The turbo'd 350 in my 74 is getting pretty tired (low compression on 2 cyl, puffs of blue on hot starts, way down on power) so I'm weighing whether to rebuild or replace with something different I found this 355 SBC on eBay and would really appreciate any opinions on value & potential HP: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2480295528 Thanks!![/url]
DaleMX
I wouldn't do it. It seems like too much money for something on EBay. For one thing the guy wants you to use Mobile 1 at break in (just sounds fishy). It might be a good deal, but Mr. Goodwrench has the ZZ383 with a factory guarentee. http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=prod_detail&catid=120&pid=156334 Dale
Guest plainswolf
I have always heard that an engine should be broken in with regular oil...not synthetic, otherwise it may not break in properly. once the engine is broken in, or at least the cam is broken in, THEN use sythetic oil in it. You guys probably know alot more than me about this. But I would use regular oil till the engine had a good 1-1500 miles on it or so before I switched to synthetic. Grumpy?? Tim240z
I'm with Dale on this one. For that kind of $$$ I would get something that has some kind of warranty behind it and a place that I can go to and complain to a person if something is bad..... Guest zfan
I would not touch it! To much money for the returns. You could buy a LS1/tranny combo for less. 383 sbc? ZZ4? Mike
BillZ260
yep, for that money get something already broke in, with a dynosheet and a warrantee.
BobsZTwins
Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going to do a teardown on my current setup, take all the bits to a good local machine shop and either have mine rebuilt (if the block checks out OK) or start fresh. I've been pricing all the main bits from Summit, Jegs, PAW, etc. It looks like PAW has some good packages and pricing to start from. I haven't made up my mind whether to stick with the single turbo or go for a higher compression non-boosted setup. If the crank isn't up to snuff, I'll probably go with a stroker kit. Like the old adage says "there's no substitute for cubic inches."
