80LS1T
Well after about of a year of trying to get my step-dad to get his airplane(yes I sadi airplane. Its a Cessna 172) out of the garage I finally got my car(80') in the garage this Sunday! It was like christmas for me only better! Tonight I got the radiator, condensor, fan, exhaust, and all the wires conecting the engine and transmission to the car disconnected! Now I have to get a "engine load leveler" to take out the motor and tranny! Where can I get an engine load leveler from? Are there any hardware stores or autoparts stores that might sell them??? I am like happest person in the world I think! By the way incase you didn't know I am putting a 93' LT1 and T56 in my 80' 280ZX!!! Anyway I had to share! Now I must sleep! Guest greimann
You may want to double check your dimensions, because if you are putting a 93' LT1 in a 80' 280ZX, the engine and trans will stick out the back of the car by 13' ! All seriousness aside, take pix and put up a site.
80LS1T
HAHAHAHA funny guy huh!? Yeah do you know where I can put up a free site of some sort? I am going to document the whole swap. So I would love to put it up for you guys with the ZX's! After all we are deffinetly the minority in here. ZX's (still want a 240Z though!) jaime240z
Some auto parts stores sells engine levelers around here. If you can't find one near your home Summit sells them and they usually get my orders to me in 2 days. (regular shipping)
Guest Anonymous
Look for a tilter or load leveler with coarse rod threads. I have one with fine threads and it takes forever to move it by a crank handle that continually comes off. Harbor Freight special. My homemade one (that got stolen) with an acme threaded rod out of a scissor jack had a 3/4 inch nut on one end that a half inch ratchet and socket could be utilized. An impact wrench sped things in to position very quickly. I should remove the worthless crank and add a welded nut. The length of the Harbor Freight leveler is about 3 incheds too long to successfully drop a set back V8 in a Zee without being a PITA
CruxGNZ
80LT1, I can't remeber if I had mentioned something once before or not, but where are you located? It's funny you mentioned the Cessna 172, my buddy and I are renting a 172 tommorow from a local airport here. !M!

80LS1T
I am located about 30 miles north of Appleton. I really dont want to order a leveler if I dont have to though. I am going to look tonight but if I cant find one then I will order one from summit.
80LS1T
Yeah I found one a Checker Auto tonight for $48.00 . I am going to pull the motor and tranny tonight! I will try to keep you guys updated! Guy
80LS1T
Well I just took the motor and tranny out. Now I am going to get all the wires together that I will need. Speaking of wires, what ones do I need? I have the JTR manual and I will be following what it says for wiring. But is there anything that it doesn't cover about the ZX's that I need to know? Also are there any sensors off the L28 that I need to take off and transfer to the LT1? Thanks ! Guy
Guest greimann
Your best bet on the wiring is to leave everything for now and use the process of elimination as you do the install. If you don't have one already, get a Haynes manual for the ZX wiring diagram, and also one for the Camaro that the motor came out of. For the gauges, it is best to retain the ZX sensors and adapt them to the Chevy block (like oil sender and temperature sender). Voltage is a no-brainer and the tach can be calibrated to speak V8. 80LS1T
Hey Greimann, you would happen to have written down what wires go where? Some of my wires are very discolored and I'm not sure if some are white or yellow!? The JTR manual has color coding for 70-78 but I think that the 80 is different isn't it? I would really appreciate any help with wiring that anybody can give me!
80LS1T
I was looking at the summit catalog just now for new power sterring hoses. Now I was wondering about the AN hoses and fittings... How do you attach a fitting on the hose. Cause I see the hose that I want to use(Aeroquio AQP Racing Hose)but it doesnt show ends on it... Also is the -4 AN bigger than the -6 AN? And what size of hose should I use for my P/S? Can someone explain how these work? Thanks!
denny411
Our local Advance Auto parts store stocks engine levelers.
Guest Anonymous
Mr. Grump's engine tilter is about $ 40.00 less than Summits and the only diffrerence is Summit's is painted red. I heard rumors that red paint cost more.
Guest greimann
I don't have documentation on what wires go where, other than having the manuals handy. My original conversion was with a carb anyway. The LT1 is a completely different ballgame. You are going to need first hand, indepth knowledge on this and the only way is to spend some quality time with the wiring diagrams. As far as the power steering goes, I have a write up on my web site abut this: http://home.earthlink.net/~dvgreimann/Powersteering.html You could probably go with -4 (smaller) on the pressure side, but will need -6 (larger)on the return side. I would just go -6 all the way for simplicity.
Tim240z
I can help out with PCM wiring, I have the 94 Factory service manual, but have no experience with the ZX. I completely rewired my 240's body harness and dash harness from scratch, so I don't even have any experience with the oem Z wiring either. I know the 93 is different from later LT1s, but not sure how different? Tim
80LS1T
Ok I have figured out the water temp sensor wires, starter wires, and mayeb the oil sending unit wires I think so anyway. I am not sure of which wires are the alternator output though. I think it's a white wire and the blue wire that is attached in same connector??? Can anyone confirm this? Also which wire is for the tach??? Thanks!
Guest greimann
Looks you have it figured out so far. The large white and blue wires are indeed the alternator. The tach wire is a blue one comming off of the coil. Make sure you have the correct temperature sensor. There are at least two, one for the computer and one for the gauge. You will want the gauge sensor. It has a single wire, bullet nose type connection.
