slownrusty
Hi Gang - I am going to remove my oil pan as the gasket is starting to leak and I will use this opportunity to tap it for an Autometer mechanical oil temp gauge. Can I remove the oil pan completely without loosening the engine mounts and sliding it out over the X-member with the engine still in place? Can anyone share any tips and tricks before I tackle it. Thanks a bunch! This is on my ZXT BTW. Regards - Yasin
Guest butlersZ
Well I had to replace my oil pan gasket a few months back due to overtightening the first gasket on a fresh rebuild I didn't want to pull the engine out again so what I did was loosen the two motor mount bolts on each side and hooked up the engine hoist to the engine lifting brackets and lifted the engine about 2 inches or so at the mounts. That way I could get a ratchet in there between the X-member and the oil pan. It took me about a half hour or so to do the whole job. It went pretty smooth. evildky
you'll at least need to lift you engine and unbolt the engine mounts, also if you find a turbo oil pan they already have a oil temp sensor built in, not sure if it'll work with your guage but it's already got a bung
Afshin
On my ZXT, even after unbolting the motor mounts and jacking the engine up until the tranny hit the top of the tranny tunnel, I was not able to slide the pan out, so I had to clear the old gasket and put a new one in with the pan only a few inches down from the block (it was somewhat of a pain in the a$$). Cody 82 ZXT
You can't just use an adapter screwed into the stock location? Thats what I did when installing an Autometer electric oil temp gauge. Seems to work fine after a year of use.
slownrusty
Well Afshin - I figured that might be the problem....SHAZIT! I looked at the tranny and how close it might be to the tunnel even with jacking up the motor and deep within my bowels I knew that there was still not enough room for the oil pan to slide out. I managed to get the oil pan loose and its dangling but after 21years and 145,000+ miles it was welded on to the bottom of the block and in prying it off, I bent one of the corners in....and I was hoping to remove the dang oil pan to straighten that corner out, plus sand it down, paint it and clean it. Now this little project has turned into a BIG pain... Boy if the tranny was not there.....that would make life easier...I wonder if I loosen the tranny and slide it back as far as it would go on the splines without removing it, if the pan might slide out then??? Cody - You must have read my mind....as I was thinking that is what I should do, adapt a fitting to the stock oil temp. sender but now I have this bent oil pan to deal with... Gosh guys I need some help! any ideas? Yasin
Cody 82 ZXT
Sorry to hear about the bent pan. It's amazing how hard those things are to get off the bottom of the block after time and heat have worked there magic on them. I thought I might actually find a Diamond in between the gasket and the block. J/K Anyway, for future refrence Autozone sells a metric adapter kit for the sending units. slownrusty
Nothing like reviving an old thread....for what its worth...I did manage to remove my pan, after jacking up the engine as much as it would go on the passenger side and then sliding it out. A big job for us ZX owners much easier job for the S30 owners. Yasin
