Mikelly
So my oldest step son was gonna do a LS/Vted swap... I'd told him not to ask for help... This time, I wanted him to do all the research, turn all the wrenches, and get it done, or not... well not happened! They put the head gasket on upside down... And fortunately when the coolant leaked into the motor, it hadn't been started yet... And Oh, NONE of the parts worked as supposedly planned... So this afternoon/ evening/ probably tomorrow as well, I worked on fixing the mess. I was pretty much PO'ed... BUt kids will be kids I suppose, and other than losing a weekend doing something I wanted to do, I spent it dealing with their mistake! Lesson on the whole import thing kinda sunk in this evening when he looked at me and commented that i've not had nearly the trouble he has with ANY of my mods... PLanning and research, or just plain goofy? I reserve comment... but the point was drilled home and I didn't have to bring it up!! CruxGNZ
You would have to have been around this site for a while to understand the relationship Mike has with his Kids. Quite a few stories and learning experiences he has shared. !M!

Guest zfan
It's all part of the process. Im just beginning to go thru it with my 15 yr. old. I think he likes American muscle as I have given him a few rides in the V8Z. We spanked a modded LS1 SS Camaro Saturday night. Got it on video Mike
Mikelly
Oh, we won't be worrying about bad LS/ Vtech swaps prowling from my garage... He has thrown in the towel and recognized that A: He really needs to wait until he finishes school to hotrod his car more than it is, since he is on a BARE shoestring budget and B: NONE of the import swap stuff he has tried is EVER straight forward... His best comment was "Your V8 conversion doesn't require all these hoops and look at the potential!" I got him! Best part was I didn't even bring it up.. he was the one who said "Screw it, the head is coming off, and I'm done with honda sh*T!" Phantom
Guy walks into a book store and says to the clerk: "I need to buy a self-help book for my son" Clerk asks: "Do you know which one you want?" Guy replies: "It doesn't matter as long as it's heavy enough to make an impression."
Guest 73TPIZ
My stepson loves his Prelude but he wishes it had Vtec. I love my V8's grunt but i respect what they can do with 4cyl's these days. I got spanked by a stock looking Civic a few months ago. He had me by a half a car by the 1/8th on motor/turbo and then to add insult to injury he then sprayed me to the tune of a 5 car ass whoopin'. When we came around i told him he shouldn't have wasted his nitrous on me. He was runnin 12.70's off the juice and 12.20's on it. He was a little cocky over his Hon-Duh though. Me wants a Powerdyne for Christmas

innerware
All the trouble aside. I think it is way cool that you and your son work on cars and such together. My dad and I never did that sort of thing and I am having to learn on my own. I can't wait to have some kids. Well, looking forward to it anyway. dot
Having six teenagers I have to agree with Mike. At some point you have to let them make their own mistakes. I have thee car nuts. One is a retail number freak who knows everything about the specifications of cars old and new, another likes to get dirty without any direction, the third is a replace the broken part only type of mechanic. I should open a dealership. To be fair, there is an incredible amount of information out there. One has to decide which information is relevant/accurate to your cause and discard the rest. Mikelly
Well to add insult to injury, We got it all buttoned back up, went to fire it up and the new hed gasket started weeping fluid all aroung the outside of the head... DONE. It is awaiting a rollback as we speak... I'm done with this one. He is a bit upset, since he was leaving to go to Myrtle Beach on Wednseday... Guess he should have tried this another time, huh? His little hottie girlfriend will have to find another Bo with a nice car to hang with on the beach! Mike 8)

pparaska
Mike, I only hope I can have your wisdom when my kids get to that age. Letting him make his own mistakes, not rubbing his face in it, being quite about what YOU think is a better machine... all great tactics! At his age the only way he'll learn is through his mistakes, and maybe those of his buds. Your words usually only infuriate. Being supportive but quiet is a great tactic. I learned that from how my dad treated me. I still can't believe that hottie girlfriend of his is only 15. I though she was 18! They didn't build them like that when I was his age!!! You ought to find his secret for attracting those hotties and sell it to teenage boys. You could retire in a year!
