Armada Differential

Recommended Posts

I spoke with mas280 the other day and he clued me in that the Armada uses these gear ratios as their final drive:

Standard Off-road

Final Drive Ratio (:1) 2.937 3.357

These would be better suited for my GN drivetrain project. I know that an Armada diff is going to be hard to come by, but I'm hoping someone might have more info for me.

In my exploring I have not been able to find the case size of the Armada. Any guesses or factual knowledge. Is it an R230 case? The half shafts are huge! I'd like to try this route since the Armada is supporting closer to my torque range than a Q45 is. Your thoughts are welcomed.

depending on how low (or high depending on your thinking) a ratio you're looking for...the 84-86 300zx turbos run a 3.54 open diff, might be a little easier to come by...but might also be the same diff in earlier zeds.....just an option

When I test drove the Titan I was told that they were using Dana 44 solid rear axles, and that Dana had licensed the 44 independent front axles to Nissan and that they were built in Japan.

Dana 44 has a 8.5" ring gear, and there ARE front REVERSE ROTATION gears available for the 44. If the front is rev rotation, you would NOT want to put it in the back of a Z, because you'd be driving on the wrong side of the gear. If they AREN'T rev rotation (and many 4x4s don't use rev rotation on the front), then it should work fine.

BTW--the Viper uses a D44 IRS and so do some Vettes. Should be plenty strong, but so should the R230 which is a 9"...

You asked for conjecture, and that's what this is. I do not know for a fact that Nissan is using a D44 up front, but that is what the SALESMAN told me, and you know how reliable they are... :?

They may be easier to come by, but the GN engine loves a higher gear. As a matter of fact John Lindsay's 240GNZ went faster when he went from the (R200) 3.54 gears to the hard to find 3.36 gears. His information can be found on http://www.turbobuicks.com in the hybrid section.

It would be nice to have 2.93 gears out back. Right now I'm stuck with a 3.54 geared LSD untill I can find the 3.36 gears.

231Z,

Tell us a little about your GN project!

The NICO forums had a post about this:>

The Q45 from 90-96 used an R200 (independent rear suspension)

The 97 to 200x (can't remember when the 3rd gen came out) used the R230 (independent) as does the Armada - the offroad pkg gets the 3.35x ratio.

The newest (3rd gen) has NON-Limited Slip rear end!
