Phantom
I was reading in my wifes Z32 owners manual the other night and saw a statement that Nissan service departments have equipment that allows them to turn rotors - ON THE CAR. That would most assuredly account for any and all mechanical tolerances and eliminate runout. Anyway - I checked with my local dealership - afterall it was a 1993 owners manual - and sure enough, they have the machine. Didn't know if that was common knowledge or not so thought I'd post it. Mike kZ
You can buy one on ebay if you want: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2477207544&category=35000&sspagename=WD1V
Phantom
Not a bad price - if I was in the business. Not exactly the route I would take though when I'd be doing it about once a year.
Cody 82 ZXT
So did they give you a guesstimate on the cost of have this done?
Phantom
Yeah - $74 for both rotors - but I also get a 20% club discount so it will be about $60. Considering they do all the labor it's not too bad. If it were the 'burban I'd pull them myself and have them turned at O'Reillys for about $16. I want these rotors to be absolutely true though so I'm taking the car in tomorrow evening to get it done.
Cody 82 ZXT
Let us know how it turns out. Which dealer are you going to?
Pop N Wood
With some front wheel drive cars that is the only way to turn them. Hard to believe they are more accurate then a bench lathe, or better yet new rotors. But just a guess on my part.
Drax240z
It isn't really "more accurate" than a bench lathe etc. in the conventional way of thinking, what is nice about this method is that A) you don't have to take the car apart, and any problems with hubs, spindles, bearings, and knuckles can be trued up. Doug71zt
It'll true everything up until the next hack hits your lug nuts with his new 500 ft/lb impact wrench. My wife's 01 Maxima went in to Nissan for a warranty outer CV boot and came back with a major run-out problem and a toe/camber mis-adjustment. z-ya
Most decent machine shops will have a machine that will let you turn the rotor on the hub, therefore making the whole assembly run true. When I put Wilwood brakes on my 240Z, I had to have the rotor and hat bolted to the hub, then the entire assembly was turned. I had slight vibration when braking before turning. After turning there is absolutely no vibration. Pete
Phantom
That's basically what happened to me. I put the JSK kit with the Willwood forged superlites on the front and got a tolerance accumulation run-out htat shoook the front like a cement mixer when I hit the brakes. Just got it back from Don Davis Nissan In Arlington - WOW - smooth as silk and do those brakes haul the car down.

Cody 82 ZXT
So did they do it on the car or did they pull the hubs off and do it? So glad to hear that they work great. Hopefully I'll actually order mine by the end of October.
Phantom
On the car. Absolutely 0 vibration now.
