Serious brakes are fun~

Recommended Posts

I have seen much talk here on high performance braking options. I have also seen and like the Arizona Z Car set up. What else is out there as far as these kits? Or what other options are there? My 71' hybrid has 4x4 toyota 4 piston calipers up front with stock crossdrilled rotors. I believe they are the Motorsports kit. Stock drums still in back. Just fine for the street only. Car has the 4-lug stock hubs and 17 inch alum wheels. Any suggestions info or websites? Thanx!

Here is the scoop on brake systems on the Zcar... The rotor diameter and the lack of thick, vented rotors is part of the problem... the other part is the caliper itself, and lets face it, for the rear, nothing says OLD SCHOOL like drum brakes.

Bottom line is that you can make the Z stock brakes work well with high performance pads and really good brake fluid, and I'd save my money on the 4X4 upgrade, and wait until you can afford to step up to something that increases the size of the rotor, along with the thickness, and to a better, lighter, more powerful caliper.

FWIW, I have had the 4X4 caliper setup and it worked ok, but there are much better solutions out there...

The vented 4runner caliper setup is a nice upgrade over stock for street/autoX usage. Mike might have something to say about that setup too since he ran it for so long.

The 4x4 caliper swap isn't much of an upgrade by itself though... unless your stock calipers are allready screwed. And drum brakes.... argh. They don't have any issues with stopping the car, but between needing adjustment and the constantly changing bias ratio as they wear, it's a bit of a pain.

The brakes I have now came with the car when I bought it. They have worked well for building and getting the car running but that's it. I know better not to even try to make them work on a road course. So yes it's a matter of time and reasearch learning untill I do a complete ugrade.

My question is who offers such kits besides Arizona Z car?

And how well does the Arizona Z car brakes actually perform?

Would enjoy hearing from someone who actually has used this kit in real life exteme conditions.

Multiple threads on this and I searched them before opting for the JSK Innovations 12.2" Willwood forged superlight conversion on the front and the Modern Motorsports 240SXcalipers/300ZXrotors conversion on the rear. Serious brakes are definitely fun. Car really hauls down and so far has shown no rear wheel bias even though I didn't install an adjustable proportioning valve. Admittedly, however, I haven't been in a place where I could totally hammer them and confirm the braking bias.
