Hugh
I've found the Cobra Calipers on Ebay fro $250 a pair. Combines with the Modern Motorsports brackets for $75 and some rotors, this is a cheap setup. Will these two piston calipers haul down a 400-600hp 240z well? Guest DiZeased_240
That is a good price on the calipers but there is more required to use the Cobra setup than you listed. You also have to order the Cobra aluminum hubs from Modern to be able to use their brackets. Will not work with stock or Z31 hubs. The full setup is around a $1000. I will be using this setup on my car and will no doubt slow down any well equipped Z. Also, the PBR(Cobra, Vette) calipers are 4 piston calipers. Hugh
Oh, alright. I thought the rotors and brackets were bolt up pieces... THe Ebay auctions said they were two piston, I went with what they had said.
Guest DiZeased_240
Sorry to blow that plan apart but at least you didn't buy the calipers only to find out you couldn't use them until you bought several hundred more dollars worth of parts. I did a lot of research before I went this route and as of now there is not a "cheap"(relative term) big brake upgrade out there.
Hugh
So you think these brakes are sufficient for the front of a 600hp Z? I don't want to drop the cash on something that will have to be upgraded again later. It seems like a nice brake setup. It's still pretty cheap, even with the other parts required. blueovalz
They'll be plenty big if'n you don't bust that speed limit! Affordable big brakes are also dependent on one's capability to fabricate. Anything can be adapted to anything else with the right forethought, and a little bit of coin. I've got '87 supra brakes on the front of my Z ($100 for drilled rotors on Ebay, $60 for the machine shop to do the rotor work so that they centered and bolted onto the hubs correctly, and $30 for the salvage calipers, and 2 days cutting and welding new ears on the strut housing. These are 12" rotors with a nice OEM caliper that, for the first time, have shown no fade on repeated high speed stops with street pads (kinda depressing in that I want to experiment with even larger front brakes, but no longer have any reason to. 8) ). Hugh
I'm just thinking about bringing the car down from a deep ten second 1/4 mile run... I learned how not to kill myself driving my 395rwhp 180sx. I couldn't spool the turbo up with anyone in front of me, thats for sure! I'd be knee-deep in their ass before I had a chance to hit the brakes.
JMortensen
I'm just thinking about bringing the car down from a deep ten second 1/4 mile run... Stock brakes will do this job just fine. They just won't do it over and over and over in quick succession. You're going to go SLOWER with bigger brakes, that is a fact. I wouldn't waste my money if you were doing this just for a drag specific race car that doesn't see lots of canyon road bombing or road racing. Guest DiZeased_240
I agree with jmortensen. If you want a little more caliper you can do the Toyota 4x4 upgrade, if you just plan on running the 1/4. It's the most affordable upgrade with minimal additional weight. If you want to road race then you might get a larger upgrade but consider ITS racers must go with the stock stuff and there are several guys on this board that can vouch for their effectiveness as long as they are properly maintained(goes for any brake system). Hugh
Yeah, its a street/strip car. It's actually gonna be driven everyday.... so the brakes will matter more on the street. I don't drive the crap outta my car, but I do live in SoCal, where traffics stops without notice... so I don't want something that will give up when I'm trying to stop for some idiots in a fender bender. To me right now, the brakes feel seriously weak. I don't have any confidence in them. I know good pads and rotors can help, but only marginally. Unless someone can suggest some really good street pads?? I felt like I was going to hit someone the other day when they just decided to lock up their brakes in front of me. There was someone changing lanes in front of them, so they felt it necessary to slam on their brakes. I was all over the back of their car... it ruined my drive for the morning. I'd like to have some brakes I can instill a little confidence in.
Brad-ManQ45
Don't forget that Modern Motorsports also has the VENTED 4X4 setup that allows you to keep your stock hubs - all the advantages of better caliper AND Vented Disc for a lot less than that $1000. (goldfish)
some where on this board a couple of months ago some one was talking about making the cobra adapter and offering them for sale.
Hugh
Any chance it was Modern Motorsports? They only charge $75 for the brackets.
Guest DiZeased_240
Modern's and someone else's setup was is mentioned in posts from a couple of month's ago. Either setup still requires a custom hub to be able to use the Cobra rotor and caliper brackets. Do a search for "Cobra hubs."
