DavyZ
Wait, I missed something. How did you 'lose' the other two cranks? The SCAT unit is a pretty good deal for only $200; not forged, but still... Davy
Mikelly
I was wheeling and dealing with two different vendors offline about their cranks... One SOLD me a 4340, but was out of stock... $500 for it WITH bearings and he couldn't tell me when it would be back in stock... Then the other guy had several 5140s and sold me one of them, low and behold it wasn't the 6 inch configuration two piece he thought he had... 1 piece and 5.7 rods.. Mudge
I have heard of 2 or 3 people breaking the scat stuff on NA cars, but alot have good success with em. Maybe just a bad run.
Mike C
Check out this month's Popular Hot Rodding (or for that matter, www.enginemasters.com) and the winning Joe Sherman 365 ci motor. May sway you away from a 383 and just build a 358 (.040 350). Over 600 hp and 500 lb ft on pump gas with a hydraulic roller 284/284 232 .569/.535 (1.6 rockers on the intake, non-split pattern cam) 108 LSA. Spend all the extra money you saved on a crank on lighweight pistons and rods and killer heads. Shermans used AFR 215 that he bought unfinished (190cc but NOT the 190 head, just an unfinished 215) Centerforce and Hays both offer a 153 tooth steel flywheel, but not sure if they have them for external balance. Check with CAT also.

Failure can be caused by a lot of things, and that may not be the fault of the crank per se. David Vizard highly recommends them for 'budget' engine builds. If I buy a new crank, I'm getting one from them most likely. Davy
Mikelly
Well after losing a 4340 crank and a 5140 Crank, I'm back to buying a Scat 9000 crank for $200. Oh well... AND it looks like I won't be doing a slid roller since I want to use a knock sensor... So I'm keeping the hydraulic roller cam and valvetrain I have... Damn... Somethings stay the same. I'm taking the motor to Pete's engine builder this weekend and having the crank shipped to him... Now to find a 153tooth ring internal flywheel...
