Durability of the stock R200 Differential?

My engine is a tick over 400 hp. and the car has a 700R4 transmission, stock 3.55 gears. The car is set up for road racing, and not for the drags. I have worried about nailing it from a stop, that I might destroy the differential or half shafts. What has your experiences been on this? This is a 1973 240Z, full roll cage, subframe, 22 gallon fuel cell, so the car is heavier than normal. Even with the aluminum heads, intake, waterpump, the car weighs 3,000 lbs.

Well I would think with an automatic it wouldn't be as hard on the rear end as a manual tranny because you aren't dumping the clutch! I am using the same set up for my car(3.55/3000lbs/400HP) and using a T56 manual tranny and I think it should hold up just fine.

By the way you should really post this in the drivetrain section. :D

Check out the Driveline board for all sorts of info on r200. But in my experience, it is plenty stout for roadracing and street driving up to 500 hp. At least. Drag car a different story, but several guys have run 9's. See thread in this board. If you break it, it's most likely because you have torn up spider and side gears because it is an open diff. You really need to go with a limited slip of some sort.

As per the title of your post, you shouldn't have any trouble with the R200. You did ask, in the body of your post, about the half shafts too. They will most likely be the weak link. A swap to the turbo CV jointed shafts from a 280ZX will be a prudent move to prevent the eventual failure of the U-jointed ones (if you've not already done this).

How fortunate am I having run the stock R200, (open, 3.54 gear) for over 4 years behind several small blocks. Down the 1/8 mi about 150 times, 1.98 60ft. 94mph for about 2 years. Nothing has broken!

Thanks for all the information. Yes I road race my 240ZV8. I have raced the silverstate and was radared at 161 mph cruising. Also have run at thunderhill. The 700R4 has been highly modified, and works well on the road courses. I have been thinking about taking it to the drags, but I do not want to tear it up. I have visions of one of the halfshafts breaking and tearing up a fender. It is street legal, and I take it to car shows. The body is modified for running at top speed.

feguru I and some others I'm sure would love to know what you did to the body. There are a good number of folks who fry automatics at speed, sounds like your doing ok with it. Plus I dont like how the rear end feels with an automatic, but if its working and you like it, stick with it.

I thought about the 240Z at Silver State, which means I'd eventually want to try unlimited (I think, after a few years), and I just wasn't really sure that this was the car to do it in, so, I'd like to know your setup and see some pix of your body work smile.gif

I would be glad to post my pictures, but I do not know how to on this website. The front and rear spoilers and wing are from Motorsports auto. It has a complete subframe. All neopreme bushings, lowered front and rear springs, tokico adjustable shocks, The 700r4 was modified by Nor-Cal transmission in Redding Ca. Fuel cell and other parts and pieces are from Jeg's. I have posted the cars pictures on http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?ppuser=3345&cat=500&thumb=1
