Looking for a hybrid/project, many questions.

Well I owned a 91 z32 N/A, enjoyed that alot, but some nice old lady decided to stop too fast and I rear ended her. Same thing happened in another z32 I had previously, so I've decided I'm cursed. As soon as the damage is fixed, I'm selling it and going to be looking for an earlier Z.

I'd much rather have something that is a classic, which never goes out of style. I absolutely love the lines of the 240, 260 and 280 z's. Especially with some nice fender flares.

Im hoping to find a hybrid that just needs fixing up a bit, but runs. I'll have about 6-7 grand to work with to start out. I'll be looking for something with either a Chevy 350 V8, Ls1, or a Ford 5.0 v8. Preferrably manual.

I do have some future plans, depending on what condition whatever car I find is in. I personally can't stand single-exhaust, so I'll be working something out to have dual exhaust. I'd like to see about having side-pipes; most feasible way I can see to do this would be to maybe get some side-mount mufflers made for the Stingray corvette, and have the rest of the exhaust piping fab'd. I havent seen side-pipes anywhere online for the 240, 260 or 280's, anyone know of a location?

Any advice I can get would be great. I'm going to start searching the forums right after I post this to see what questions I can answer myself. But for now, here's a few:

-Where is the best place to look for a Z similar to what I'm looking for?

-What is the feasibility of having a side-pipe style exhaust? (the kind that runs under the doors and vents exhaust in front of the rear wheels.)

-What are some good resources for parts (mounting kits etc.) for doing a v8 swap? (just in case I cant find a hybrid)

Any help is appreciated!

hmmmmm, mistake number one

"I'm going to start searching the forums right after I post this to see what questions I can answer myself."

You should search b4 u post, but we all make mistakes.......its all good

First off, if your looking for a Hybrid, look under the Buy/Sell Forum, have all sorts of cars that already have sum of the engine choices u want.

I don't know of nebody that makes a kit for side-pipes for the datsuns, so u'd b in for sum custom work, but IMO that would look damn hott, the thought never even occured to me till now.

And if you get one w/o the V8, then the first thing u should do is goto http://www.JagsThatRun.com and buy the manual, u know wht, even if ur car comes with the V8, get the manual neway, it will help u a WHOLE LOT, unless of course the car that u buy comes with the manual.

Good Luck with ur project

EKU,

Where in Richmond do you live? Are you a student there? I grew up in Richmond and my grandmother lives on Eastway. Do you know where Moberly is?

Side pipes will be a complete custom job, completely do-able if you have fab skills, or deep pockets!

FWIW I bought my Z for $800 with a V8 already in it. Just got lucky. Of course I have dropped 7k into it and it is currently in pieces!

Good luck.

Welcome to the board!

You can buy side pipes from Jegs, I think a company called Patriot makes them. I have seen a few Z's and ZX's with sidepipes and they look fantastic! I too am comptemplating doing this one day.

You asked-Where is the best place to look for a Z similar to what I'm looking for?

Hybrid Z's are all over the place. Just be careful that you do not get bit by someone elses bad work. Remember you usually get what you pay for. I have looked at and drove a couple of Hybrids since starting my project and passed on both of them. One guy even drove down from N.C. to meet me near Atlanta with his death trap! Wanted a lot more for his car than it was worth.

You asked-What are some good resources for parts (mounting kits etc.) for doing a v8 swap? (just in case I cant find a hybrid)

Check with a company called Motorsport Auto (MSA) and Jags that Run (JTR). Both of these companies have the V-8 mounts for the Chevy engine. You will have to have custom mounts made for any other type of engine. Buy the JTR manual and read it. I still read mine and find new stuff that I have overlooked all of the time. You can get the book from Jegs or Summit if I am correct.

Last but not least try using the search function because a lot of questions like yours have been answered a thousand times or more on this board.

Good luck to you and welcome aboard!

I forgot to mention Ebay. There are a couple of V-8 Z's on there right now and there is also the JTR book that I mentioned up for auction on the site.

Again I would make damn sure that I went to look at these V-8 Z's on Ebay before I even considered bidding on them. You will get a new one ripped for ya if you are not careful.
