Front Camber plates for a 280ZX, how do you install them?

I just bought some camber plates for my 280ZX for the front. Now I bought them used so I dont have any instructions on how to install them. So I was wondering if you guys could give me some info/pics on how these things go on!:-D

Also as you can see the center is offset to one side(to the right on this one)so obviously there must be a left and right. Which side should the "thicker" side go to, front or back?

If you put the thicker side on the front that would give you more caster. Then you need to cut a big slot in the top of the tower so that you can slide the bottom piece all the way back and forth, and drill the 4 holes to mount it from the bottom. That's pretty much it.

 

The slotted holes at the corners are supposed to be for a little caster adjustability, but on my 240Z there isn't enough room to move the plate at all. ZX has a big strut top so you should have a little adjustment there too.

So does the top of the strut just go into that hole in the middle and then put the nut on over it? What about the 3 original mounting bolts? Do I just cut those off?

My plates were universal, so i had them drilled to suit the standard stud pattern. The nuts for the top were quite long and turned on the lathe to take up the difference in size, you might be able to see it in the pic below, or email me for some closer pics.

That plate I showed above is not actually my plate. I just borrowed it from the Ground Control website. I bought them used off of ebay.

 

Jmorteson, that nut looks kind of fancy. Will I need a nut like that? Cause I didnt get them with the plates.

Basically you need a spacer to take up the space between the 5/8" monoball and the threaded end of the strut. If you call GC and tell them that you have a ZX with camber plates and you need the nuts they'll sell them to you. They're pretty cheap. Or you can make a spacer and use the regular nut on the top if there are enough threads to do so.

Thanks, I think I will have to call GC to get some of those nuts.

 

Im still a little confused on what to do with the 3 original mounting studs on the top of the strut plate. The part on my plates that moves looks like yours Jmortensen. The one I showed above has 3 holes in the plate. Mine dont have those 3 holes.

AFAIK= As Far As I Know.

 

I believe you need coilovers. I suppose you could have a special upper spring perch made, but the spring perch needs to sit on the bearing on the bottom of the coilover. Most sit on the bottom of the monoball itself, the GC units have a big needle bearing on the bottom. Regardless, if you tried to use the stock strut top I don't think it would work because the top of the strut wouldn't be long enough to attach to the camber plate.

Hmmm, well that sucks! I guess I should have done a little more research before I went and bought these. I dont know if Im ready to switch over to coilovers yet. The suspension in my car is already new as it is. I just put new struts, springs, bushings, and sway bars in 2 years ago.

 

Maybe I will just wait for a deal on coil overs to come along....
