warrenp
just wanted to say thanks!! for the help some of you gave me for the installation of 454 vortec going in to my 87 3/4 ton chevy. i know it wasn't a z related swap but i do appericiate the help! just to let you guy know this is a beast!!! the engine was in a fire from a 98' one ton 30,000 miles so it began life multi port injected. but i could save much more than the intake. so i converted it to a HEI ignition and 4 bbl intake and put hooker headers on she runs great!! no smoke or burns oil!!! thats always a plus! and gobs of RAW NATUARLLY ASPERATED POWER! to bad top end is about 65 but some one needs one of these in a z i havn't had her dynoed but if i had to guess 300 + hp easy imagine if she was multi port injected! even my 36" swampers can be smoked right off!! some one needs on in a z!! Michael
I'm working on it (454 in a '78 280Z)
5foot2
I've got a fresh 454 in my 86 1 ton dually 4x4 (6-8 months old now). It's a pretty mild motor, 8.0:1 cr, peanut port truck heads and a performer cam/manifold kit. Headers, duals, etc. I'll never dyno the thing to know for sure, but DynoSim tells me it's good for around 325hp @ 4000rpm and 490pf of torque at 2500rpm. I use it as a work truck and plow truck, and it will push a mountain of snow up my 800' of driveway. The big downer, like you 65-70 has this motor spinning 3500-3800 on the hiway, which I hate. I'd like to do some 3:55 gears in place of the 4:10's, or the coolest would be to swap the th400 for a 4l80e.

warrenp
kinda depressed to see that 295 hp i put a 750 edelbrock on with preformer RMP intake. i wanted one of those new air gap intakes. but there hasn't been any one ebay. and i got this one for $125 looked like new when i got it. believe it or not the gas milage isn't to bad compaired to the last engine i had in it. built 350. that wans't built to well i bought the truck with it. a rod broke just going down the road. i like this 454 i'm glad i swaped to a big block! no regrets! maybe next a 3208 cat or 8.2 4 stroke detroit. i have a 8.2 turbo detroit that needs a head gasket supposed to have lower hrs and stocks 300hp. scored that for $200 and it's complete minus the transmission, intercooler and radiator. whats the best up grade i can do next for my 454? i am how ever using my exhaust that was on the 350 it is a dual exhaust but souds quiet. hardly a rumble. i think it's 2" or 2-1/4? grumpyvette
that 454 EFI engine looks fairly LAME but it has hidden qualities, the main one is the $3500 cost for a new complete engine, its supposted to be a roller cam,low compresion combo and adding a turbo charger.........well lets say its a reasonably cheap base to build o tq monster with the correct parts http://http:/chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/48499/ btw some info to read http://chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/89618/ http://chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/89643/ http://chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/93620 http://www.worldcastings.com/docs/05_cat_pg7.pdf http://www.worldcastings.com/docs/05_cat_pg23.pdf http://www.worldcastings.com/docs/05_cat_pg27.pdf big block info you really should get these books and read them before going any further, it will help a good deal http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1...1234339-0571324 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books heres more bbc info, but don,t let the guys make you think only oval port heads work well! it totally depends on your combo,s rpm range, displacement, gearing, weight, cam timeing, etc http://www.off-road.com/chevy/tech/454engine/ http://www.idavette.net/hib/vette_bbfh.htm http://www.protopline.com/racingaluminumbbc.asp http://roadsters.com/bbc/#prep http://roadsters.com/bbc/#bore http://roadsters.com/bbc/#oval http://www.chevelles.com/racing/BBCombo.html http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/raceheadbbchev.html http://www.dragraceresults.com/worldcastings/ http://www.nastyz28.com/bbcmenu.html general big block info! http://www.amotion.com/cbb.html http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/headbbchev.html http://roadsters.com/bbc/ http://www.chevelles.com/racing/BBCombo.html http://www.racingengines.com/public/sales/wrldprd1.htm http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLi...CP/Chevy30.html http://www.mortec.com/location.htm http://home.hiwaay.net/~ppatter/pat...udd_article.htm http://www.bigblockchevy.com/Bittne...Alky1500Hp.html http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/7161pp.html http://www.onlineperformanceparts.c...les/ablock1.htm http://www.off-road.com/chevy/tech/454engine/ http://www.directhits.com/ChevyDynoReport.asp http://www.theengineshop.com/techinfo7.shtml http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/gas/specs/crank.html http://www.diabolicalperformance.com/diabolical540.html http://avs.epix.net/schorrperforman...hevyBB_290+.htm http://avs.epix.net/schorrperforman...ChevyBB_290.htm http://www.diabolicalperformance.co...mevalue468.html http://chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/93650/ big blocks like more compression, bigger carbs and a slightly larger cam than small blocks if thats what your used to building btw
warrenp
is is rooler cam and 4 bolt main. i have a set of garret t3's and comsidered putting them on. but if i was to do so i would rather not put my carb on a container to keep it pressureized. plus i used this truck for hauling gear/and i donno if a turbo's are such a good idea fro that. maybe i'll go with a good cam as you say. would you suggest maybe having the heds milled? maybe .02 ore maybe a bit more. i can get that stuff done for free. Michael
Some good points made above, but that doesn’t assuage my frustration.... The trouble with crate or OEM big-blocks is that they’re towards one or the other extreme: 3500-rpm truck engines that don’t make much more torque, let alone horsepower, than a mild 406 SBC; or radical race-only engines with 13:1 compression and 360 cc rectangular-port heads. Have you ever seen a crate BBC with a flywheel? Well, it if comes with a flexplate, and (I dare say) ALL of them do, and the crank is externally balanced, often the right way to rebalance the engine is to pull the crank, take the whole rotating assembly to the machine shop, and reassemble the short block. But if you’re going to do that, what’s the point of buying a crate engine? You’ve just disassembled what you paid someone to assemble for you! So what about starting with a crate short-block, say a Gen VI 502 from GMPP, and adding your own heads and valvetrain? Great, except that chances are that the piston dome volume is all wrong. Options are: angle-mill the heads to deal with the BBC’s monster 119-122 cc combustion chambers; run a mild cam; run a big cam but end up with inadequate DCR; or rip apart the short block and get pistons with larger domes (see above). So what’s the right dome size? It depends, of course, but for a stock-stroke 454 with 119cc combustion chambers and a mid-0.6†lift roller cam, it dome volume comes out to around +25cc. Ever seen a crate shortblock with a 25cc dome piston? Oh yeah, and then there’s piston to valve clearance issues. Bottom line, THERE’S NO GOOD SOLUTION! The BBC world has split into 3 camps: muscle-car restoration with nearly stock engines, trucks with nearly stock engines, and dragsters. Building a street-performance BBC (about 1.1 hp per cubic inch) isn’t getting any easier, despite the superficial appearance of lots of new aftermarket parts!!! Don’t believe me? Call up AFR, Pro Topline or Dart, and ask them about their oval port heads. Listen to the laugh at the other end of the line.
