chopstic
im currently working on a 78z w/350 sbc. I might be moving to california here shortly and understand the emissions exemption is now capped at 1975. Now im already into the project and dont really want to buy a pre 75 z car to start all over again. Now if i bought an earlier 75 or older junked/wrecked z car could i just swap in the dash so when they check the vin number it comes up as emissions exempt. OR.... what exactly legally constitutes the year of the car? If i welded in parts of the chassis/suspension/etc. from an earlier z car wouldn't it technically be in part the older car somewhat. Phantom
Do you look good in stripes? Unless you do I wouldn't recommend any of those approaches. There are several threads on this forum on how to get your car through CARB. Do some searches and read up onit.
materchan
get a p.o. box in a county that doesnt smog, then change your cars address to that p.o. box. some people here do that and i might have to do that too.
Clifton
Changing the vin would be easier. Door, fender, and dash. There is a stamped one on the firewall. It can easily be ground off. I did it on a Z in the past after not getting a title after 6 months and already putting too much time and money into the car to risk filling for an abandoned vehicle title and not getting it and loosing the car. Just buy a cheap parts car for the vin and then you'll have spares. As long as you didn't steal it who cares, gotta do what you gotta do to drive your car. I won't tell. randy 77zt
if you move to cally from out of state you will have to smog for initial registration in any county.the 78 motor would probably need a whole list of junk(air injection system, efe(heated air filter)egr, oem intake and carb to pass.if you are moving to komunistfornia to make more money think again.a small house is $500,000 close to the citys where work is at.car insurence is outragous.you are always in a traffic jam.
