Cool vids! I just dont 'get' the whole drifting thing though... Sure its fun to watch (and do  ) I supose, but I'm sick of all the hype about it.. you're going slower around a track, and burning out tires.. My understanding of a proper 'drift' (4 wheel) was always about getting the car going as fast as possible through a corner, and then pushing that last little bit, which almost breaks all the tires loose, but the car is still in control and if the driver is good, the drift 'fades' out and the car exits the corner at full steam. What do I know though..

That's mostly correct. The only purpose of using 'drift' is to rotate the car so you don't understeer at the exit of the corner.

Yeah, that's what I call a 4 wheel drift too. What these guys are doing is a powerslide. Tire companies are loving it, that's for sure.

My understanding of drifting, as exhibited by the younger crowd, is it was started by a bunch of young Japanesse guys who wanted to race but really had no access to a track...so they found large enough parking lots to do their deed. Personally, I think its just another addition to the motorsports world...just like another flavor of icecream. Some will like it and some will not. Bottom line is....if the drifters are having fun and are safe, then its a good thing. If people think it has anything to do with roadracing or autocrossing, they are soarly mistaken! I do believe drifting takes talent but its not the quickest way around around a track, its a style thing..."How good do I look"?

From what I heard, drifting was invented by Japanese delivery persons that work in mountain areas. They use drifting techniques to prevent running out of road thus going into a cliff when emergency occurs.

You don't think NOT sliding would be the safer course when driving a delivery van on a mountain road??? Come on, now...
