Double Wishbone Front Suspension?

Recommended Posts

Was thinking that the suspension of the type like from an Aussie Falcon, see cutaway pic below, may be suitable for a Z. The top of the coil spring sits in the body about where a strut suspension spring would sit, instead of the more common location sandwiched between the two wishbones.

May be a bit cramped in a S30, S130 and Z31 have wider strut housings. Mounting the upper wishbone seems to be the biggest challenge, but without the spring load to carry it should not require that much beyond the mere welding of pivot brackets to the existing structure. Looks DIY doable to me anyway :)

It's an Aussie Falcon. Might share a few common parts with Ford US (like engine) but is mostly all local stuff. The chassis/platform is totally different from a US Ford. But I'm sure if you poked your head under a few guards, you might find something similar.

That Falcon suspension looks so much like my old Charger's, its an A Bodied mopar,

Big difference was the Charger had torsion bars instead of springs, but otherwise looks very similar - upper and lower control arm,

Old Valiant stuff is much much cheaper to get your hands on than the ford stuff :-), i think i still even have a bunch of my old Charger stuff like upper and lower control arms atleast,

I got one better. I have a stupid memory for various things, so I remember Ron Tyler's Sledgehammer Z.

Problem is http://www.rontyler.com no longer exists. Fortunately, the way back machine does. So, here's Ron Tyler's suspension. Not double wishbone, but upper and lower A arm configuration:

if you can't get the pics to pull, I saved them here:

Make sure to read the very last comment at the bottom of hte page and follow the link!
