David K
And i got see under the hood too! I was pulling into a stall at Albertsons Supermarket and a yellow Integra pulled up in the stall next to me at the same time. I took a quick glance at the wheels and they were 5 lug! This very timid Asian kid gets out and i tell him its good to see a real type-r instead of a knock off. He tells me theres more to this car than i can see. He reaches in for the hood latch and pops the hood. I get all giddy while im waiting to see whats under the hood. He pops it, and a frikin huge turbo is bolted to this engine and it has custom headers and the engine bay is all dressed up and there is a huge IC sitting in front of the radiator, and all kinds of go fast toys all over the place! The car looks completelty stock from the outside! I ask the kid what kinda power he is looking at and he tells me about 300 pounds of torque. Now im impressed, because your usual ricer would quote Horsepower figures. The kid was very nice and he talked to me with respect and he also seems to know about his car and how things really work!!! I reallllllly have a thing for Production performance cars, no matter who makes them. Frick, i wish i had my camera!!!!
Guest ON3GO
my friend with a 1999 SS with some bolt ons raced a 1994 Type R that was turboed and that thing just waxed the SS. cool cars when done up right. mike
Jay1970Z
My brother just called me this morning to say that he was riding around in his friends real Type R and they raced their other friends 350Z. He said they won by a considerable margin, which I found hard to believe, but then again I have no reason to believe my brother would bs me. I always kinda wrote them off as rice-mobiles and ignored them, maybe I should reconsider my stance...
Guest ON3GO
i dont think a Type-R would beat a 350Z. if the Type R has alot of work then maybe but still, supercharged ITR's run like .2's faster then stock ones.... mike
Mudge
Nice to hear that not all "ricers" dont know anything, but 300 pound feet is still not spectacular, those are 2700-2800 pound cars? Still decent, but I'm guessing not what would attract me in terms of price/performance.
Phantom
Right - Edmunds lists them as just under 2,800 lbs. which puts their weight in Z-car range. The key too is where does that torque appear. I knew my '83ZX 'felt' stronger than my 77Z but wasn't certain until I looked up performance specs onthe two years. '77Z is 149HP at 5600 & 163 lbft at 4400 RPM while the 83ZX is 145HP at 5500 and 166 lbft at 3000 RPM. The difference in the torque curve says it all. Unless those little 4-bangers are boosted, whcih will definitely lower and broaden their torque curve, the old L28 will definitely give them a run for their money. Mudge
Yep, as much as I like NA for ease and cost, blower/turbo stuff is nice in that it helps retain bottom end streetability, just like having a big cube engine.
Guest livewire23
cool, sounds like im gonna have to race my prelude and 280Z in stock form. I guess its kinda cool having two cars with similar weight and performance. The prelude was 160hp/156lb-ft back when it was stock, and it weighed 2800lbs. So my 280Z should be just slightly slower than it (the prelude is lighter/more powerful now). Then once i determine who's faster, the Z is going on to bigger and better things (boost), and the prelude will continue to be worked as a SE-R spec V killer. Maybe some head work will help it kill spec Vs... I dunno...need another 20+hp to take on those wretched sentras.
Jay1970Z
The Type-R my brother was in was heavily modified as far as I know, and I can't speak for the kid driving the 350Z's driving abilities. Just wanted to clarify that it was not a stock Type-R. As a matter of fact I raced the same Type-R while it was still stock in my lightly modified Seville and won by a decent margin. Again, these kids probably don't exactly know how to manipulate a manual transmission properly, they are just having mom and pop buy them expensive cars to be cool around school. KiD-ViD
I dunno I dont think the stock type-r motor (b18c5) makes a good boosting motor. the vtec really complicates things. I would take a CRV motor (b20) build that up and boost it. ooo and if you put it in one of thoes <2000lbs CRXs!!! I dunno I think you could make a cheaper car go faster for less money. but maybe he just likes saying he has a boosted type-r.
fl327
put all that mess in a mini cooper, then were talkin.

Umm, no - turbos and VTEC seem to work just fine judging from the HUGE HP numbers being posted on the AEM board. Those suckers rev to the Moon with a serious kick from the VTEC! fl327
vtec and turbo is a good combo, i still cant see how these guys run boost on the vtec motors, dont they already have dang near 11-1 cr in na form???? my old b16a civic would give up 9200rpm or pure bliss, with no torque. KiD-ViD
right it can be done...but if you are going to do this in your garage it is alot easier to tune a turbo without the cam profile changing on you. A shop will have no problem but usually honda tuners who do it themselves dont mess with vtec when going turbo.

The guys I've seen doing it on the AEM board simply set the VTEC to come in really early, tune, then tune with it off, then they can set the switchover wherever they want and have it tuned in that mapping Sure, it's a pig when it's turned on low but you can tune it. None of the Honda guys have mentioned any special problems that I can recall seeing. Can't you do this same thing with a Hondata?
Guest Anonymous
I have a hard time beliving the 300lbs/ft or torque out of a streetable honda 4 cylinder. But a turbo Integra and a 350Z would be a good close race. I know a 350Z can edge out my Firebird (with mods) in an 1/8th not sure how bad I would lose in a 1/4.
